Possible blown clutch?
My friend drives a '96 GS-R and I think she might've blown her clutch, or it's near death. She was slowing down to a stop sign, going from 3rd down to 2nd, then to first for the stop and it "made a loud sound" and then shut off. She pushed the clutch in, thinking she stalled and tried to restart it. The car wouldn't go into first and there was a "really bad smell" that nearly made her puke she says. She said she can start from 2nd, but it refuses to go into 1st and there's nearly no pedal pressure. I'm thinking her clutch is close to going, but since i'm not there (she's in Canada) I can't say for sure. Just thought you guys could help her out.

sounds like a clutch-master or slave cylnder is possibly bad ... check it out first then if that isnt the problem then you should hope it is the clutch .... good luck

I could throw out all the ideas that were previously mentioned and maybe even add a few. But bottom line is if she is driving it she better get it fixed quick before more damage occurs. Providing its the clutch/components or something to do with the hydraulic system and nothing is wrong with the tranny. If she drives it like that rest assured the tranny will not last. I would check the fluid first. If thats not the problem I would imagine the pressure plate is gone or maybe she lost a spring.
