gsr questions (blinking check engine with mileage)
okay, my gsr has 100,500 miles on the body but not sure how many on the motor (motor was stolen). So the other day i was at a meet and the check engine light started to blink after i turned the car on. It went off after a couple seconds, and blackonblackteg showed me how to just turn it off completely.
my question is at what mileage does this light start to blink? Is there a certain mileage? I have an idea of how many miles are on the motor, about 80k.

It doesn't blink after a certain amount of total mileage. That is if you are talking about the sevice engine soon light. It comes on when you need an oil change. After about 5k it will start coming on when you start the car. If you don't reset it it will eventually come on and stay on. The little reset button under the steering column should fix that.

I'm guessing it was the 'maint. reqd.' light that was flashing. On my '95 it comes on every 7500 miles because that's the service interval. It starts to blink a few hundred miles early, then at 7500 it stays on. Reset it with the button under the dash.
The check-engine light is triggered by problems the ECU finds. It's not based on mileage at all. You can reset that one by disconnecting the battery for a minute, but if you haven't fixed the problem it'll come right back on.

if it is the check engine light and not the maint required light then i suggest you pull the code. you can do it yourself or pep boys can do it for you for 19.88 with tax and all. i went to pep boys and they found that my check engine light was triggered due to low voltagge to the throttle positioning sensor. the guy was cool and fixed it for free

The light comes on for mileage from the last time it was reset. So if you drive around for 6 months with it on, it counts miles from the point when it was reset. So if you want to use the light, you'll have to do that in order to synch it to your engine's schedule.

Buy a Haynes manual for $15, then read the code the ECU gives you and you will know right there.

My check engine light started blinking but right when it started blinking my motor started to have bad idle, shook like and smoked like a mother ******. Also my oil smells like gas. I am stuck here at college ( 2.5 hrs away from home) and i risked taking it home, thank God i made it. I havent had time to pull the head to see whats up but im sure its the rings. my compression was mad low on cyl 2 and i burned 4 qts of oil in 115 miles.
Im pretty sure your all good though. Just get the code and fix her up.

Which one are you talking about?

It WAS the "Maintenance Required" light. The check engine light can only be shut off by the ECU when the problem the car is having is fixed.

You need the vin number of the motor and run a carfax. That can give you an idea. Otherwise you should have recieved paperwork with your new motor which would disclose the mileage on it.

thats true so very true. i have a haynes book. but when it comes to stuff like this i'd rather have a proffesional do it. its only a couple of more bucks and i get the feeling of security cause i know that someone who is certified is working on my car
