Y8 'Mini ME' on ad D16A6 - need some help.
I have a Y8 head and intake manifold. Hopefully the injectors and fuel rail are on the way. I would also like to put in a new timing belt. I have heard that:
- I need a special head gasket.
- The Y8 MAP sensor is not compatable with the A6 one.
- I may have OBD-0 to OBD-1 compatability issues.
- I should use the injectors from the A6 head instead of the ones from the Y8 head, as they cannot 'talk' to each other.
- I should get an HX timing belt.
Looking for expertise on these issues and any other that may be of concern. I have an Apexi VAFC to control vtec timing.

take a look at the valve relief spacing of an a6 piston and a y8 piston. notice they are different widths?
So your doing a mini-me swap? So am I and I've been asking myself the same questions and here's what I've came up with.

Use the d16z6 headgasket

Not sure about this one.

I thought the Y8 was the 96-00+ civic engine models which consisted of the OBD-2 system. I think you will have to get some OBD-O to OBD-2 conversion harnesses. Or you could use the Z6 ecu and injectors and use the OBD-0 to OBD-1 conversion harness. If you have a car w/ Duel point fuel injection, you will need to switch to Multi port fuel injection wiring. It's a Y8 head. I've always thought you are suppose to use the water pump, timing belt of fthe Y8 head unless I'm wrong. Can someone correct me on this?

If you have the VAFC to control the VTEC, I think you can still use the SI ECU unless I am wrong. I haven't really researched OBD-2 systems but I know for the mini me w/ CRX SI (pm6) ecu you can run the VTEC solenoid to an RPM switch to activate it.
Hopefully I helped in some way. I suggest getting some Helm's manuals which show the wiring diagrams for your Y8 engine head and the car your working on.
Good luck.

i used a z6 belt on a a6/y8 minime no probs. also on the a6 block when u pull the head, u will need to drill out or tap out a plug for oil. i cant really say how it looks but ill get a pic up asap. on the injectors u need to use the a6 ones. and as far as the dizzy goes im not too sure. im not very familiar with ob0 cars yet. but i got a crx and im going to start learning
you don't drill/tap it out.. it pops out w/ a screw driver...
http://crx.honda-perf.org/arti....html

also.. you'll need head bolts for a y8, as one is different near the dist.. (or you'll need that 1 bolt, if u can buy "1").
use the y8 head gasket, its metal, not paper whatever like a6/z6 ones. (stronger)

Thanks for the help. As I see it I will need:
Y8 headgasket
Y8 head bolts (ARP?)
A new timing belt. Z6 or Y8?
A6 injectors and fuel rail (off my old A6 head)
Also there is a MAP sensor is attached to the Y8 head, but the MAP sensor on my '88 CRX si is mounted on the firewall. How is this resolved?
OK, now more dumb questions. What cars had the Z6 heads and what cars had the Y8 heads? '92-'95 Civics (for both?). And what spark plugs should I ask for (yes I know - Y8. But does anyone recommend specific brands/part numbers?).
Stay with me please - I'm getting close...

Keep in mind the z6 headgasket will give a lower compression then if you used the y8. You might want to keep the compression down if you plan on going FI or if you don't want to deal with a high compression engine.
I'm OK with high compression. I know I must run Premium, but WTH.
So will either a Z6 belt (from a '92 - '95 Civic ex/si) or a Y8 belt (from a '93+ Civic ex) work?

My 5 hints.
1) You can use the Y8 injectors.
Only trick to it is do not use the injector resistor box.
If you use the A6 injectors you have to use the injector resistor box.
2) Z6 and Y8 headgaskets are now the same part number.
They used to be different and the Y8 gasket used to be thinner = slightly more compression.
3) You can run OBD-0 or OBD-1. The distributor selection depends on the ECU you plan to use.
If you want to use the A6 (PM6) ECU then you will need to use the A6 distributor. Also, you will need to buy something to activate VTEC and bump up fuel during VTEC. VAFC is a good solution.
Going OBD-1 (P28) will require that you do the necessary wiring conversion. You can use a 92~95 DX distributor (bolt pattern is correct) or use the Y8 distributor.
4) I believe the Z6 and Y8 timing belts have the same number of teeth. Same number of teeth = same length.
5) You will have both map sensors in the car so try either one. I think they both should work, but you can find out for yourself. For OBD-1 the Y8 one works for sure.

OK. So are Y8 injectors larger (flow more) than A6 injectors?
BTW I have two CRX's. My other one is a '90 si with a Jackson Racing supercharger. That is serviced by a Zdyne gold ECU. Is it possible that I can tune this setup in my '88 'mini-me' si with my Gold ECU? I would just save the tunes on my laptop.
Its getting interesting...

OK - Its a metal head gasket from a 96+ Civic and the same timing belt should also work. Ant more issues that I sjould be aware of?
