Default how to determine stock sleeves from ductile iron?

it's been bugging me this whole time after reading a post about someone buying a sleeved block from someone else and the sleeves were 2 toned. i know my sleeves were 2 toned as well so it scares me. i get the feeling sometimes that my sleeves just might be replacement sleeves from darton.

now i've been thinking since i'm gonna be changing my headgasket and timing belt shortly...could i determine that my sleeves are ductile iron by using some type of metal detector? a magnet perhaps? since aluminmum doesn't react to magnets. anyone with any ideas?

you have to know what STOCK sleeves look like vs what a Iron Ductile Sleeve is first.

Look at the first pic, thats a stock sleeved B18

VS

A sleeved block with a whole new Iron Ductile Sleeve pressed in

but then you may also get a different type of sleeve which is called a replacement insert type. Which doesnt cut the stock cylinders like the 2nd pic and install a new thicker sleeve. What it does is just replace the inner part of the sleeve. Its much thinner and looks almost like the stock sleeves, 1st pic. But of course, most likely, you are looking for something like the 2nd pic... so if it doesnt look like that. its not what you want.

okay my sleeves look just like the stock ones on the top picture...but on the reciept from Kwia from Chicago says that they put in ductile iron sleeves. man...i think i'm screwed then if they're not. if they're not ductile iron sleeves...is there anyway i can take it back and have them reinstall the right sleeves even though i'm not the original owner but have the original reciepts? man i want this done right.

take a close up show of ur sleeves, mainly the part where they are next to each other, then u can tell if its sleeved or not

Damn...you're scaring me now. tomorrow i'm gonna try the magnet trick since a magnet doesn't stick to aluminum as well as it does to iron. i really hope i'm not screwed! i'll also take pictures and post them as well.

okay...nevermind...i just read through carefully on Darton's website and it says that their REPLACEMENT SLEEVES are made of IRON DUCTILE. man this really sucks...to know that my sleeves are just replacement sleeves!! i'm gonna have to contact Dan and have him resleeve my block.

on a side note though...how much can these replacement sleeves hold HP wise? i've been pushing them to 21psi and nothing has happened so far.

Why are you screwed? You can still make 500whp on stockers.
