Default --- .63 ar housing on a .48 wheel ??? anybody tried this? ------

I know it's prolly a stupid question but can i put a .63 ar housing from like a turbonetics turbo onto my current .48 ar housing turbo. it bolts up and everything, but the wheel is just really small compared to the size of the diameter of the outlet. i'm trying to increase my top end performance by sacraficing low end spool up time.

this is not my turbo, it's an example of the .63 ar turbine housing that i have extra, i have a .48 ar turbo right now

its not the A/R thats teh difference its the stage wheel.

it looks like you have a stage I or stage II turbine wheel in a .63 A/R stage 3 wheel opening housiing

.48 is NOT the wheel size. thats the HOUSING size.

stage I, II, III, IV, V is the actual turbine wheel size.

and no you cannot use that housing with that wheel with that big of a gap between the housing and wheel.

sorry for not being clear, i just posted a pic of a 63 housing, i was hoping tha i could find a good pic of a 48 but i can't. Why can't you use a 63 housing on a small 48 housing sized wheel. will that gap cause problems?

there is specific wheel to housing clearance that the housing is machined to. if your wheel is too big the housing wont fit on, if its too small youll have too much clearance and it will destroy the performance of the turbo

no need to be sorry. im just tryin to educate.

you can use a .63 A/r housing, the only thing is that you need to find one with a Stage I or II opening (* i say this because im unsure of what stage your wheel is but i know its definatley not a stage III)

the housing you have is off a turbo with a stage III wheel.

SO. lets just say . stage II is 2.25 inch dia. blade the housing you have is for a stage III ( 2.50).

you can use a .63 AR housing with a stage II blade opening

but you CANNOT use a .63 AR housing with a stage III blade opening. you'll lose velocity and wont spool your turbo.

imagine a water hose. with water flowing through it, you put your finger on the end and the velocity of the water come out faster right? however if you take it off, theres nothing aroudn the opening and the water flows out slowly. the analogy is kinda rough sketched but i hope you get the idea.

very good explaination, i fully understand now. however, i have another ? now. where can i get a larger a/r compressor/turbine housing for a t3 nobody seems to just sell housings

.48 AR housings are really fun Dylan. You should keep it. It's not like you have rods+pistons, might as well get as much boost response as you can

haha, this thing better flow enough at high rpm's or i'm gonna borrow my buddy's full T4 and slap it on there

No real difference in boost response between .48 and .63 AR "stage 1" OEM T3's.

i'll measure my turbine tonight and post what stage it is, it looks pretty agressive though

but doesn't the .48 ar hurt top end since it's so restrictive?

Ya, a little bit but they spool up about the same. You're dealing with a pretty small turbine wheel so even if you had a huge housing it still couldn't flow that well up top. Not to say that it's bad, but just not really like a stg3 or anything as far as flow goes. Just because half of H-T dwells on the A/R ratios doesn't mean it's the most important thing to look at.

Why are you worried about a .63A/R housing when you're only running 9psi? If you want more power turn your boost up and keep the faster spool up even though it will be minimal with your turbo. No need to spend money on another housing is the main reason I wouldn't bother.

High compression has nothing to do with how much psi you can run. It affects how much horsepower you can make on pump gas.

high static pressure + high dynamic pressure = higher octane gas needed

The reason i want to run lower psi on a turbo that can flow more is so i can run pump gas and still make 250ish whp. Myabe i'm not understanding you correctly
