VTEC only works in 3rd gear
its weird my VTEC only kicks in, in 3rd gear. I get a check engine light once in a while for VSS. But it doesnt matter if its on or off, VTEC will only kick in, in 3rd gear. any ideas why??
im pretty sure its kicks in all your gears. probably 1st and 2nd gears go by to fast for you to notice the vtec.
Are you basing your vtec on when the noise changes? or when it actually feels different?
try and gun it in 2nd gear while going like 20mph or something and tell us what happens

Is it really though? I've never tried, but assuming the ecu doesn't look at gear selection, if you have all the other requirements met (rpm, oil pressure, engine warm enough, throttle open enough) shouldn't vtec kick in? If I'm off on the requirements, feel free to correct me, I'm no expert.
So, who wants to try and get vtec to activate in reverse? You'd be moving at like what, 35mph?

Im going by both how it sounds and by the way it feels. You can feel VTEC kick in, and in first and sometimes in second it does neither somedays. Other days it'll work fine. I also sometimes through a CEL for my VSS. But VTEC still kicks in with the a CEL.When i say that it doesnt kick in, in 1 and 2 im talkin about with no CEL though.

if ur vss isnt correctly measuring, then the vtec will not work crrectly</TD></TR></TABLE>
i will have to go with this answer. post the code number and maybe i can check it out tomorrow at the dealership if i have time.
i'm still not too sure of what you're trying to say. i'm sure vtec will still work with a cel. as long as the things it works off of are met. when does your CEL come on? in 3rd only? not 1st or 2nd? and do u reset your ecu so that the CEL will go away? or does it go away after a few drive cycles?

i've never seen anyone go over 3grand in reverse. that would be interesting to see someone go 30mph in reverse.

Had the same prob w/ my 92 GSR... turnes out to be the wirng to the ecu from the pressure switch. Don't know why only in 3rd but when I replaced the wiring all was well
