Default Tach help needle bouncing

The car runs fine but when it gets to about 5000 rpm it bounces all the way from 0 to 8000. Any suggestions on why. It works fine and is steady below 5000.
Thanks

That can be a sign of ignitor failure..
Pull off the distributor cap and check the connections..

In my experience it means that your distributor is failing or will fail soon, you might want to get a back up distributor ASAP.

The tach bouncing is the ignitor on the way out. Keep a spare in the glove box, and get ready for The Big Stop.

The speedo bouncing is usually the vehicle speed sensor taking a ****.

I always carry a spare already mounted to the heatsink
because mine has gone out twice now..once bitten twice shy..

The second time I replaced it on the side of the road..
If it says "OKI" on it,it is a piece of crap..

One thing that will cause this is if the speedometer cable needs to be lubed..
Without grease it will hang and bind or "whip" and cause the needle to flucutate..
