Default sleeper exaust idea...is it practical?

I was thinking about cutting my exaust from the stock muffler closest to the engine, and then run a shorter custom exaust with a muffler and everything, so it would just be under the car, and still look like I have stock exaust.

thoughts?
ideas?

I don't know about CA, but way over here in NC, the exhaust must exit behind the rear bumper.

Well whats the point of running it to my stock muffler dosent that defeat the whole purpose, cuz the piping of the muffler is about the size of a quarter
oh and about smog, Im going to get it smogged before i even start modding the car.

There are quiet exhaust systems with larger diameter piping. http://www.kteller.com and get a good quiet muffler and resonator.

in a related matter I had a friend with a 3000GT that worked at a Mineke. This is what he did:

The 3000GT has the dual exhuast, but has an H-Split or something. He installed 2 side pipes halfway down the car and added a "throttle body"-like plate with 2 hinges running out the top then through the shift hole in the body. Long story short (and longer explanations) he would HAVE a stock exhaust, but then with a twist of a ****, have a short-shot exhaust out the side.

Like an exhaust selector, if you may. Twist left, stock exhaust, twist right, out the sides.

I thought it was pretty genius... but it took him forever and he's a good welder and works at a shop. It also had the problem of getting jammed because of the heat differences. But when it worked it was awesome. I'm sure it's been done before, but I thought it was great.

Your idea sounds like not such a good one.

Yeah, exhaust cutouts are nice. He's not the first person to do that, btw, and it's not that hard to install them.

ok, but why does my idea sound like not a good Idea?

also on the exaust switch yes ive seen that, where there was a "Y" splitter off the head to the exaust, so with the flip of a switch it could be open header, but then again there goes your back pressure.

Thats the purpose of a larger diameter pipe, less back pressure. Free flowing is what you want.

If you want your exhaust to be "sleeper" then run an exhaust cutout. Yes, it will leak a little bit, but it will be quieter than side exit piping.

you only need a little back pressure, enough to pull the next pulse along. if you have a good header that effect is taking place within the primary/secondary.
think about it, @ 3000 RPM there's approximately 6 pulses a second going through the header...(i think that is correct) and a good header has somewhere around 26"x1-5/8" primaries assuming it's a 4-1. there will still be enough back pressure. All you need is the siphon effect to start.

It will just seem like you have a hole ion your stock exhaust. And why even put a performance muffler on under the car? Just do like 3ft of pipe and a resonater if anything. also the rear section kinda dangles there when not attached to the midpipe.

Just run a larger diameter pipe straight back into a Dynomax or Magnaflow "Super Turbo" oval muffler, and place it in the stock location. Run a long resonator also.

I think the HKS exhaust is a perfect sleeper exhaust, unless you go F/I.

what could be practical about an ungodly loud and high-piched open pipe creating a burning hot spot under your car while an unused muffler dangles and swings unsupported in the rear?

The sound will be anything but "sleeper", and any gains would not be significant enough to outweigh the problems. People would think your car is broken.

you're adding more weight to your car... and the sound wont sound like stock anyways.. they will still know you are running modded...
your best bet is to look for something that looks stock and sounds stock... but doesnt hinder performance like stock..

Just to add to that. Exhaust cut outs have been highly popular with the Domestic crowd. But to add to the post, I would really get a custom exhaust put in with a resonator. (http://www.kteller.com) has some good exhaust setupts. You also have the choice of purchasing Greddy/Trust or RS*R ex mag exhaust systems. Their systems are basicaly a long oval muffler but the price tag is pretty high. Its pretty much up to your budget. In my opinion, I like the exhaust cutout systems but I would rather have a whole new exhaust. Theres nothing wrong with showing off your exhaust sytem.

yeah, I was planning on going turbo, so I would have to have at least 2.25. But still have the car look at stock as possible.

I like the way that looks, you cant see anything, but excuse my noobness, what exactly is a cherry bomb, my friend pointed one out to me a long time ago and it looked like a large *** Co2 can made into an exaust.

all you need is Exaust that doesnt bling! bling bling means zoom zoom to cops. anything FLASHY, Anything BIG, Anything that looks store bought actracts cops. cops around here dont really care much about it, unless ur flooring it at 4 in the morning in a neighboorhood.

Its the oval "Turbo II" muffler made by Cherry Bomb, its a 2 chamber muffler. Its pretty damn quiet until VTEC kicks in, when VTEC kicks in it doesn't sound like some pissed off bumble bees either. I don't have a Cat, just a 18" 2.5" mitsu resonator all the way back to that muffler, 2.5"
I love the way it sounds.

yeah that is my main concern is the cops. I want the car to look as stock as possible. I dont want a loud exaust except past 3-4RPMs.

When i normal day drive, i usually shift at about 2 and a half. If i find a nice stretch and want to let loose, I'll rev to about 5 or 6, and as soon as i hit around 3, i hear my intake which is fun.

I think that is what some guy called cheesefrog did. had a hatch with 400+ hp but he kept the stock tiny exhaust. had an electric cutout. so car looked and sounded stock but was some sort of heavy duty custom turbo thing. supposedly would run with a NOS'd viper.. was some vids on the net at one time..
