my advice to junkyard engines in the first place is to do a complete teardown of the engine just in case something serious is wrong with it. I do this because it takes more time to put in an engine to find out its bad just to take it out and tear it down anyways. As for low compression may be a headgasket. If you heard valves hitting check timing belt and if its a junkyard engine check if theres even a timing belt on. Also I think you should check the pistons and the head for damage.

on the bill of sale, there is usually a startup guarantee. i know on mine as long as i changed the timing belt and the water pump (and showed the proof) i had a guarantee on my engine.

before you go postal on the junkyard, make sure your valve timing is right. (timing belt)

also, before that, use another compression tester. And then use a third. Make sure your tester isn't fucked.

if valve timing is CONFIRMED and you still have no compression, then squirt some oil in the sparkplug hole and do another compression test. if your rings are the cause of the low compression, the compression test will yield higher numbers with the oil there sealing them. i guess there's a slim chance that the rings are the cause. But from what it sounds like, its almost 99.9% chance you got a completely fucked valvetrain.
