Default Engine mounts?

I'm about to embark on a pretty serious project. How difficult and time consuming is welding in custom engine mounts?

Difficult, no..

Time consuming, yes.

With very little fab experience i was able to throw together some mounts and my motor hasn't fallen out yet - i can post some details and the process i went though if you want, but.. What are you trying to accomplish?

I was thinking of making up some engine mounts as well, but where would you go abouts to find the bushings to fit inside the mounts?

I got lucky and got some chucks of urathane off my buddy - long story

I swear I read somewhere that mcmaster.com sells chunks of urathane. just buy some chunks, spin them up on a lathe into a shape of a T to fit some pipe and then stick in some sleeves in the middle and your good to go!

I made this pic up for my dad - he spined the urathane for me on a wood lathe , works perfect! He's got a ton of experience though..

hehe.. meh, I think they're ok... it's one of those "if only I knew then what I know now" situations.. i'm definantly going to revise them before they see boost - they work.. but they could be much better.

mounts arent hard. I have DIY mounts for my b series in crx. Used 91 Integra mounts that are tweaked.

If your doing it from scratch just get the engine in. Position it etc and support it so it dosent move once you have it where you want it.

Then just look and see how you could make the mounts work. Use cardboard templetes. And just arc weld them in if you dont have a mig. Mounts can be made out of all most anything. I know someone who used old rear trailing arm ends before

^^^

have the car on jacks or blocks at your ride hight - I had my springs taken right out. That way when your engine is floating in your engine bay with no mounts (just supports) the car will not move either.

Use wood, jacks, engine hoist, metal, vice grips, chains, cats, dogs, pipe, clamps - whatever you can find to position the motor in the engine bay EXACTLY where you want it and keeping it nice and solid like HR said. String from left to right on the fender bolts will keep the engine aligned to the car so forget about levels...

take pics!

I know mcmaster.com sells urathane that you can mix together to make your own mounts. There was a few posts about diy on vwvortex. I am not sure if they sell chunks of urathane.
