As a member of both SCCA and NASA you will need to look at the rulebooks. The NASA CCR is online at their site (nasaproracing.com) The SCCA rulebook will set you back $30 in addition to your annual membership fee. Call them on their 800# in Topeka,KS or check the website.

Assuming that you have NO experience on track and the car is not equipeed with a rollcage, full harness, fire supression and other safety equipment-then takingan HPDE with one of the NASA regions or a similar 'school' is the best way to get started. The investment requires an SA2000 helmet in some cases (best choice anyway) and a long sleeved shirt, pants and leather shoes (wrestling ones work, btw). The car can remain totally stock for your first event as you will need a seat for the instructor. Spending money on other things will not make you faster-seat time is what you need the most. Upgrading your tires will come with time. DO NOT use a combination of wheel-tire that is more than PLUS 1 unless you absolutely have to-you want to learn the car and how it works on track-this will make you faster in the end. Smoothness is also very important and your instructor will guide you.

I can go on with this, but you must decide for yourself in the end what you really want from the track. Personally, I have a huge investment in a track CRX Si. It is my way of having fun; others go to amusement/theme parks. I have driven a CUP car too and enjoy that, but it is not my favorite. Other people like go-carts. You decide how far you want to go and whether you can afford to pursue it.

Got questions or want to chat-drop me an e-mail.

As posted above the HPDE are a good place to start, also go over and read the stickies in the Road Race/Autocross they is great info there. I am a member of NASA and have done several HPDE and I am also putting together a Honda Challenge 88 CRX. Go read in the RR/AX forum for a while, don't post before searching over there cause you will get your thread locked quickly.
Just know that each HPDE is apprx $280 a weekend, plus gas, food, lodging, tires, brakes, and etc. But trust me it is a blast!! well worth the money. This is your school to get you racing license, you have to do about 6 of them.

HPDE

You learn more about your car in 2 days than you would in 2 months on the street. And soon you realize that the speed comes not from the car, but from you. As mentioned, a stock car is best, as it will reveal areas most needing improvement, as well as being a whole lot easier to learn on. Everything happens slower, giving you time to learn the tendancies on the limit, and correct for mistakes.

I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that.

jc836 and I have helped eachother along this path to bankruptcy and we agree on much of what he posted above. However, he was a lot nicer than I'm going to be.

Frankly, if you are really talking about RACING and not just open track days, be prepared to shell out the money. All performance parts aside, the basic safety equipment required to compete (between stuff for you and stuff for your car) will set you back a minimum of $3k (cage, seat, net, suit, helmet, shoes, gloves, fire bottle, kill switch, plus install of all this stuff). Figure in at least another $1k for replacing broken stuff in your car that might hold up to street use but will never hold up to racing. Then you can figure in the cost of a weekend which runs between $400-$1k depending on how cheap you can live ($250-300 fees, $20-50 fuel, $100-200/weekend in consumables like tires/brake pads, food and shelter away from home).

And then come the performance parts

Road racing a crx (assuming you build one yourself) will cost you roughly 15-20 thousand to get started... after that you're looking at about 10-15 thousand per season.

Weeelllllll, rice_classic is even more harsh than I am. You could buy a reasonably built, prepared car for less than $10K, but the season costs are about the same.

I was speaking under the assumption that the owner would be building the car.

BUT

If you're smart (like me) you will buy an already built, proven champion. Just don't go and destroy it your first season like me.

They make great road race cars... fast, cheap and responsive. After all, look how they dominate ITA.. I think they're GREAT road race cars. Much better then autocross.... but then again, can you even compare the 2?... I don't think so.

I think you must consider using the car as is for an HPDE BEFORE spending any more of you hard earned money. Travis and I are not rich and it has taken both of us a considerable amount of time to prepare our cars just to pass safety tech inspection and get logbooks. As I said before, and HPDE is only going to set you back the cost of the event plus consumables and lodging. I am fortunate to have a track 50 miles away, but the tolls have to be paid. Long trips are another matter and much more costly. Buy a really good set of tires and put them on your stock rims (Dunlop Sport A2's come to mind or Azenis-IF and only if you have the car prepared properly). We took our Prelude to Pocono on RE730's and had a blast with it first time out for an HPDE. The CRX is a racecar and thus is set up to never be street driven.

For those that would argue I feel that the CRX is an excellent choice to learn car control and technique. It is much more responsive than some might believe, when properly prepared. I have seen a B series motor in a CRX and the driver simply blows by me at Watkins Glen. He can wind it up to 8K and I'm limited to 6800. Gear ratios also play a role. Both cars actually corner nearly the same-go figure.

Again, whatever you do-invest in an HPDE and get all the seat time you can. Once you are comfy in the car you can do the serious modifications to make it a real race car.

And if you're stoopid (like me) you won't buy an already built car, and you'll spend closer to the $15-20K we were talking about before
