I know the brand Teknic...They have cheap prices on some decent looking clothing...But I have never really gone down on my bike that hard yet...(knock on wood)...but will the zipper and velcro withstand a hard fall? The last thing I would want is my shoes flying off and not be able to walk due to me having no skin left on my feet....

yes, they will hold well, most race boots also use the same system, zip up and velcro over.

laces have a way of gettin caught in the bike at the worst moments

Are these boots still appropriate/necessary if one isn't riding a race-replica bike on the track?

I like safety, but not overkill or posing.

I dont think you can ever overkill on protection....If you dont want to use motorcycle boots i guess you can just use timberlands or something.....
