Default k20 vs type S k20a2

okay, obviously the type s version is more powerful, looking at 160 bhp vs 220 bhp. my question though, is if anyone knows or has a link to where i can see the actual differences. im talking hardware and all. is the type S just tuned more? how many actual parts are added? they both have the I-vtec feature, and a 2.0 liter, WHAT GIVES WITH THE 60 HORSE DIFFERENCE?!

k20=jdm type r -220 pnoys
k20a2=usdm rsx-s - 200 ponys

I believe the k20 has higher comp pistons, different valves and springs, and more aggressive tuning.

My understanding was that a lot is going on in the head. Thats why people put the Type S head on the K24. I think. I haven't messed with K series much. I would like too see something from someone who has worked with them a lot.

yeah, that would be nice. it would be great to just get the k20a2 and drop it in because there is no difference in bolts or mounts, which is great, but i would like to save a few thousand, hehe. my k20, i am already considering getting new pistons and rods, and in a month or two im getting it tuned. i havent considered the valve springs though, maybe i will look further into that as well. it would deffinetly be nice to know some more though about everything. someone gave em a link to a really good site that helps with some stuff, but i havent had time to do a thourough checking around the site. http://www.k-series.com i believe.

are you talking about the k20a3 (civic si) engine? vs the k20a2?

there are huge differences.. different engines really

The heads are different, the blocks are kind of similar with different water paths and no oil squirters on the k20a3.

The type-s head has I-vtec on both cams.

hmmm, that was alot of reading but it was worth it. im kind of wondering now if all the upgrades i am doing is really worth it on this engine....the k20a3 as they called it in the post. i dont know, what do you think? i have worked my butt off to pay for these parts, and i dont want it to be a waste. what i have so far cant be to bad though, plus i am getting some stuff within the next 6 months. i still wish there was a way to rebuild the engine to be more like the type S. i have the whole turbo get up and goodies that go along with it. CNC forged pistons are due soon, V-afc2, and a bunch of other stuff im to tired to even think about...you see i havent had my car for a month and a half because its getting more things put in, and now is the time where im trying to figure out all my options to add to it. thats why i wanted to know the differences in the engines. i just hope this car will be bad *** with the k20a3 i have in it. thanks for a heck of alot of information though.

i believe the k20a JDM type R motor has 220 ponies and the k20a2 has 200 ponies, but the type r motor uses 101 gas and the a2 will run fine on pump gas there both really good motors, but the JDM does have diff vavle springs and advanced tuning, but nothing with a little tuning of the k20a2 ecu cant hurt to squeeze out that extra 20. so basically what im trying to say is that if your a daily driver go with the k20a2 motor cause it can run on pump gas and tune ecu to get taht extra 20 hp and for JDM motor is you dont wanna tune ecu and run on 101 gas

no matter what you do dont get a k20a3 motor the vtec setup is ridiculous and the motor is all around weak the k20a2 motor is the best to go if your a daily driver and if not then k20a but whatever you do stay away from teh k20a3 motor the motor is ridiculous its a joke really.

Um, i have tuned three JDM k20 engines with K-pro on 93 octane. No issues with knock whatsoever. The engine typically makes 10-20whp with mods more than the type s engine equipped with the same mods. Best bank for the buck is a cold air intake. Next is a good header/exhaust. Increasing the cam angle is what makes the power in some sense (let alone fuel and timing), and the less backpressure on the exhaust size the more you can run. 220-230whp is easily obtainable with good bolt-ons (I/H/E) with a JDM k20 engine tuned with K-pro.
