Some newbie questions
Hello everyone. I'm pretty new to honda tuning and have been trying to research some things. I'm getting rid of my car (91 talon tsi awd) and I'm considering buying an ef hatch and making it my new project. My plan was to buy a stock hatch and drive it through the winter and then in march or so do a swap and some bolt ons and such. I'm 17 and not rich so I'm tryiing to figure out what swap is right for me. I was considering your basic b16a and then having some decent money left over for other mods. The thing that concerns me about this is how far can the b16 really take me? I'd like to have a nice 13 second, daily driven, reliable car. Basically I just need some input as to how far I can push the b16 or what other options I have out there that are better. Any information for me is much appreciated. If you really wanna take some time out for me and educate this DSMer, hit me up on AIM @ A0burkell.
Thanks guys!
Mike

First off, Welcome to HT. I was once in your shoes and I had an 89' SI hatch. I palyed w/ the single cams for a while and they didn't take me anywhere. I did your "basic" B16 swap w/ ys1 tranny and I was very pleased. The car went 13.90's and I drove it every day for a year. I now have another 89' Hatch w/ a turbo'd b18b. I have been pleased w/ it so far(NA). The B18b's extra torque is worth the swap. You have many options w/ either swap you choose but, I feel you will be more pleased w/ the B18a/b swap. PM me w/ any questions you may have.

What are the stats for the b18a, I see the b18b has a little less hp but more torque. Which motor runs faster stock for stock, the b16a or b18b? I want to stay NA btw.
Also, what mods did you have on the b16 that ran 13.9?

The b18a and b18b are both motors out of an Integra LS. The A is from 90-93, and the B is from 94-01. The b18a has 130 hp/120 tq, the b18b has 140/127. The b16 has 160/110.
So the b16 has more hp than the b18a/b, but less torque. The b16 is also vtec, whereas the b18a/b is not.
Both are great motors, I have a b18a swap in my crx, and I love it. The torque is cool, but the vtec of a b16 is also nice. Its all in what you want to do

The stock Vs. Stock will start a war here so, I feel they are both equal.
My b16 was a freak out of the box. Ebay intake, open header(stock ex. mani.), mugen program
, M/T 20x7's. It went 13.95-99 most of the time.

ok lets just get your b18 info right...
as far as b18 there are two type of a and then there is b.... b18a1 is for 90-91 teg has 130 hp 120 tq ( less aggressive cams than 92-93) b18a2 is for the 92-93 teg has 140 hp 125 tq (more aggressive cams)
and the b18b is 94-01 and its 142 hp and 127 tq...( basically the intake manifold is a little bigger than the 90-93)
and yes b16 is vtec (more hp)
and b18 is non vtec.. (more torque)

I've never seen a block stamped B18a2
. A 92-93 block will say b18a1 just like the 90-91's. The only difference between the 90-91 and the 92-93 is the Cams. The block is exactly the same!
