Just to answer the question, no. 99% start out with X and wish it were Y. In other words, people start with 160 Hp motor and mod it till it has 170 Hp. Then they go damn I should have got a GSR...... Just start with what you can afford and build to you hearts desire of fiscal limits

On a budget it looks like the mini-me is the way to go to get your VTEC fix. You can make some decent power with what you have already and you don't have to fuss around with mounts, axles, etc like you do with a B series. However, B16 swaps are plentiful and can be had cheap as a complete kit. B series parts are mostly interchangable which means a lot can be done to upgrade them. Then from there you can swap the block to a LS 1.8, 2.0 or make the "poorman's Type R" for less than a real type R motor would cost.
In other words. Yes. Most people overlook the b16a simply b/c it ONLY has 160hp. But that's still among the top rated engines. Plus it also depends on what you are dropping these engines into. In a crx, 1.6 or 1.8L engines are just badass. The b16a is the best, "bang for buck."
1/4 for Intake/header/Exhaust on a b16a should do low 14's...if tuned right.
Just remember one thing, "every single question you ask will have at least one variable."
Save up and do it. Just make sure you save up enough for the "wrongs" that happen in a swap.

hes definately right all my friends underestamated the engine to because it only had 160 hp but i wont be the first one to tell you that especially in a crx a B16 would Rock It.
they didnt think it would be much more faster than my stock d15b2 but i told them it would be so i did before and after times. before 19.1sec at 71.98mph and after 14.97 at 94.3mph

thats a big drop in times. when i had my d15b2, it ran 16.6@85mph and after my sohc zc it went 15.1@91
you had a much bigger time drop than i did.

B16 is very worth it. Honestly i feel like it's even more reliable than the D series motors. I could put another 100k on my engine without a second thought. It's got some go when i want it and has the reliability of stock. If you want 1/4 mile times, turbo the **** out of it
Then you'll be horsepower happy! You'll keep up with your friends cars and usually, thats all that matters. PS. It's much cooler if you do the swap yourself and call your friends for advice...
having people do **** for you - - -
DOHC right of passage lol

Here's an idea. Find someone who has a B16A CRX who is willing to let you go for a test drive. Only then will you REALLY be able to make an intelligent decision. My opinion? Yes, the B16A is better than the D-series motors. But the larger B-series VTEC motors are better yet. It is all a matter of what you can afford.

Reliability is probably going to be better with a B16A due to the increased strength of the motor (and the rest of the drivetrain) compared to a D-series motor. B-series motors are just alot more 'overbuilt'.

yeah it is but its also a 4dr compared to a crx quite a weight difference. plus the D15B2 had 220,000 miles on it.
