When starting, engine jumps to 2500 rmps and then revs it's self from 1000 to 2000
I have a '99 V6, and this problem just started. When I start the car, the engine will idle at 2500 RPM's. After about 30 seconds, it will drop to about 1000 and then revs up to 2000. It will continually do this. No idea why it started. Also, my steering is extremely hard, like there is no power steering. The car has not been driven for over a month. After I started it up the engine did it's strange thing, but this I tried to drive it and I started to smell a burning smell from the engine, but I don't know where it came from. Thanks for the help. I hope someone as heard of this before.

I would suspect a problem w/ belt drive preventing the PS pump from being driven. Bad belt, frozen AC, etc. The idle problem may be a symptom of excessive idle load.
good luck

ive had the same idle problem for a bit now, i never found out what the cause is...
but i did post a thread about it a couple of months ago, and majority of those who replied said to check for (vacuum leak/clean iacv/adjust idle/throttle body cable)

sound like the iac is acting up disconect it and ajust your idle swrew down some then turn off the car plug the iac back up and reset the computer..if that doint work take the iac off and clean it out......and if that dont work u might have a bad fast idle vavle u can take it off and clean it 2 it is under the t/b or intake manifold...
or u can just block it off...

If not, then do a radi flush.

It can affect idle. Won't hurt, and you are due for one anyway. 13 bux for a gallon of new blue stuff at the dealer. Just need to remember to bleed correctly.

disconnect the negative battery cable for 15 minutes to reset the ECU.
An easy way to check for vacuum leaks is to spray carb cleaner (FI cleaner) from an aerosol can around the vacuum lines with the engine running, if the idle smooths out or the engine increases in RPMs you know you have a vacuum leak....

i had the reving problem with my '91 accord, took it to the dealership, turned out 4 out of the 5 speed sensors were bad and had to be replaced, charged me 800 dollars
you really should get that fixed soon it wastes gas, i remember being beside a viper feeling like a complete dumbass, he must have thought i was trying to race him or something, he just gave me the dumbest look ever.... so naturally i just blew a kiss and winked, he just shook his head
