oil change in 7500 miles?
i also brought this up in another thread but i'm still curious as to why most people here change their oil every 3000 miles instead of the 7500 as recommended by honda? i just bought my gsr and i wonder what the previous owner did because the car has 150,000 miles on it but it runs almost perfect. he didn't seem to be performance oriented so i assume he followed the recommended 7500. should that be good enough?

7500 miles is a LOT of driving. If you aren't too performance oriented, I guess it could be OK, but, I think for peace of mind, 3000 is a VERY good number. I guess it's not too much considering that mini's are suppossed to go for about 12k before theirs. It's kinda up to you, but if you have crap in your oil, better to remove it after 3000 before it can do damage oppossed to every 7500 when it can do a ton of damage. I've also read theat VTEC can burn oil when it kicks in. If you're not changing oil until 7500 miles, you might not check oil pressure. Who want's a fried block because you were trying to save $30? Food for thought. Beter to spend the extra 30 and have it reliable than having no car at all.
I own a civic and a GSR, My GSR, I haven't went 2500 without changing the oil, mainly because I took my civic to about 5000 miles one time, and the check engine light comes on, then in two days the engine is dead, and smoking, almost ruined the engine, so ever since then its before 3000 for me
i guess i've been going cheap planning ahead on changing my oil everything 3000 miles ($6 for 5 quart of penzoil at walmart, $3 fran filter) but considering what you've said about the mini's, i guess i can afford the good stuff (mobil 1) which is better then what it's been seeing before (castrol gtx) and stretch it out to 7500
You can either use some cheap oil and replace it frequently (3k miles) or use high quality synthetic oil that lasts longer than conventional oil and replace it every 7500-10000. I use Redline Performance Oil and they claim it lasts up to 12k. The engine runs silky smooth and warms up a bit faster. It's also good idea to use magnetic drain plugs and replace oil filter in conjunction with some nice oil. hope this helps.
