i dont know what exactly the acronym stands for, but it's the correction for altitude factor.

/edit/ just did a little research, and i came up with The Society of Automotive Engineers, i guess it's their specs that the dyno's correct to.

I don't know how the exact calculations are made but its based on air density, which is based on air pressure, air temperature, and vapor pressure.

if i am not mistaken, SAE stands for Standards in Automotive Excellence or Society of Automotive Engineers. but, i think it is the standards one.

SAE is a correction factor to set all things equal between dynos.
So, if you dyno your car in Cali or in Coloroado...you would (supposed to) get the same results when they are SAE corrected.

SAE correction sets everything as if it was the perfect conditions. This included altitude, temperature and atmosphere pressure.

For example, here in Phoenix, in the summer the SAE sorrection fasctor is 1.07 while in California its more around .99. So, the car is California is actually putting down more power to the ground then the one in Arizona...but with SAE correction they will be the same.

Arizona= 158.8 HP Actual
170.0 HP SAE
California= 171.7 Actual
170.0 SAE

So when you dyno the car..both cars would show 170 SAE HP...yes in reality the car in California is making 13 more WHP due to different altitude, temp. and pressure.

Society of Automotive Engineers - they determine everything that has to do with standardization for anything automotive in the USA. they even are responsible for designating and approving new technologies for use in cars and even steel grades for use in cars. you can buy the standard that governs the correction factors involved in dyno testing. SAE HP correction is a method of putting every single dyno on the same basis by correcting all the various atmospheric conditions to a known control - so when you compare a dyno with a GSR in death valley with one in Denver those are the non disadvantaged/advantaged results.
