Default How come friends car be so much faster with only 5 extra hp?

I have a 94 accord ex and my friend has a 98 accord lx. Mine is a manual and his is an automatic. I also have a CAI which will help make the car a little bit faster. But thats besides the point. From a standing start were pretty close and then when we getting to highway speeds he can just smoke right past me. My guess is that since the car is older it has less compression therefore causing it to be slower. But even with a 5 hp difference I would think that race would be pretty close but it doesnt appear that way. What do you guys think?

Transmission gear ratio the his 98 is proably geared for performance/gas milage your tranny is proably geared for real good gas milegage. Weight is the same Hp and tourqe are close.

Your older engine has probably lost some power over time from friction and wear, that sort of thing.
