Billows of smoke when starting car
I'm running turbo w/ straight pipe (no cat)
When i start the car, there is a HUGE billow of White smoke that subsides after about 1 min or until the car is warmed up.
What is it? steam...non combusted fuel? Any other turbo folks have this issue?

My car does the same thing. I was told that i need to replace the valve stem seals...but who knows. Good luck though

yup..water cooled T4 Ball bearing turbo.
any permanant damage?...I can't afford to replace or rebuild my turbo
I'll just make sure coolant levels are adequate at at all times

If the seals are an issue, I can just re-add coolant, will there be any further denigration of the turbo? I can't afford a rebuild right now if a rebuild is in order

the only way to tell is to inhale the smoke
Seriously, it could be just condensation. If it's oil, it will have a real bad smell to it almost unbearable to breath. If it's just condensation, it'll have a light smell of gas. If it's coolant, it'll smell sweet and make you hungry.

My car when I start it in the mornings lets off a small cloud of white smoke.
It only does it when the car being sitting over night. Since I let the car warm up about 5 mins before I actually drive it, when I do put it in gear and give it a little gas you see the smoke. While it's at idle you only see it if your actually looking at the tail pipe.
Check your valve seals. If you take your spark plugs off, with a flash light look down. If it's shiny/wet then you know whats up. If not then look at your turbo turbine housing or DP for traces of burnt oil residue.
Mine is the valve seals, just a little.
