1991 Civic Std Minime (D16A6/D16Z6) Questions
Hey guys,
I need a little guidance. I've been searching the minime threads, but I haven't really found a situation like mine (bits and pieces, yes). Here's where I am right now...
Car:
-Stock 91 Civic Std hatch
-D15B1
-Running on two cylinders
Parts I have:
-D16A6 needs new rings
-D16A6 IM/fuel rail/wire harness/EM
-D16A6 Distributor
-D16A6 ECU
Short-term plan (1-3 months):
-Car running on 4 cylinders
-Si tranny
-VTEC head would be really nice
Long-term plan (3-12 months):
-Minime swap
-Forged internals
-Sleeved
-Turbo running 1 bar or better
-LSD
-Clutch/FW upgrade
Heres' my problem... Since I'm going to boost this engine, I'm not worried about any shortcomings from not having a Z6 IM or EM. I am going to have to take this engine apart to replace the rings. I can't afford forged internals or sleeves right now, but I could do a block guard and the head swap while it's out. I've looked at the idea of converting to OBD1, but it seems pretty expensive. I will need tunability later on (for the turbo), but I want to put this head on as cheaply as possible.
Questions:
-If I can get a Z6 head and a VAFC, what else will I need to complete the Minime (other than gaskets)?
-Is the Z6 timing belt the best one for a an A6/Z6 minime?
-What is safe boost for a rebuilt A6 bottom-end with a block guard?
-What parts do you see that will cause "bottlenecks" in this setup?
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give.
-Nate

I wouldn't recomend anything but an OBD1 mini-me
OBD1 ::
-Z6 head & valve cover
-Vtec solenoid
-OBD1 distributor
-P28 ECU (manual ECU)
-Z6 plug wires
-Z6 timing belt
-Spark plugs
-OBD0-1 jumper harness
-New water pump (not needed but good to have)
-Gaskets

not really answering your question, but some friendly advice.
Most of the time it takes a lot longer to get the turbo setup going for most people than they think.
If i was you i would just get the mini me running, as obd0, and then worry about obd conversion later on if and when you get the turbo parts together.
EDIT: also, keep an eye out for the LSD. You won't want to have to buy one right at the last minute, cause then you'll pay twice as much.

My biggest question is what parts I need to do an OBD0 Minime that I don't already have.
I'd also like to know what the tradeoffs of OBD0 are vs. OBD1

Forget the blockguard, your OEM piston ringlands will go before the sleeves.
You need a headgasket and I recommend ARP headstuds.
