You really only need to purge if you're welding stainless.

Best bet is to get a rubber plug that fits in one end of the pipe that you're welding. Tap the plug with a fitting that is compatible with your shielding gas hose. If you don't want to waste gas you can plug both ends and just fill up the pipes or just plug one end and keep the gas on.

wouldn't the rubber caps just melt?

when we do piping/tubing at work we'll cap off both ends with plastic caps, poke a hole in one, and turn on the gas. but you'd want your caps as close to the weld as possible, so you don't waste so much gas and you'll run less risk of having atmosphere inside the pipe.

Aluminum foil makes a great back purge barrier, some worm clamps to hold it in place, and a few holes poked in the foil. Like they said you will use alot of Argon purging like this. Low flow and a separate back purge bottle are key......or just one gigantic single bottle

Masking tape. Plain, cheap, masking tape.
You can weld within inches of it and it won't catch on fire, esp if you're tigging.

In the phrase "atmosphere inside the pipe," atmosphere means outside air that is not argon, which will cause premature oxidation of the weld.

so you need gas behind the weld and also at the weld junction correct? how do you do that with one tank?

I think you would use a NPT 'Y' or 'T' male union. correct me if I'm wrong.
