rebuilt motor breather/exhaust smoke..
Im posting for a friend and im not a honda guy (sorry used to be a dsm'r) but anyways we finally got his b16 going...fully built JE pistons and rods blah blah...anyways it idles high...and smoke comes out valve cover and exhaust...the smoke looks like steam almost like when you start on a cold morning...and it doesn't smell like burning oil at all...im going to do a compression test but...CEL throws a coolant temp code 6 i think along with upstream o2 code 1 if i remember the numbers right...they were both replaced...ecu reset...still throws code...car doesnt over heat...no oil and coolant mixing...haven't done a leak down test...any ideas...the smoke doesnt smell like burning oil but it either has to be oil or coolant but...any ideas?
i replaced the PCV valve and it definately helped with the smoke...now we can't figure out why it's idling so high (like 1100 with ignition completely retarded and idle adjustment screw in all the way) and also why it still throws the coolant temp and o2 codes even after reseting the ecu/clearing it. we replaced both sensors..car runs and drives fine excluding there's no VTEC due to the coolant temp sensor...so any ideas btw its obd 1.
check the voltage going to the ect and go from there. also try unplugging the connector on the iacv. if the idle doesnt drop to approx. 500rpm, you'll most likely have to replace the iacv. remember the ect and iacv have a close relationship as far as general runnability issues are concerned. if the ect is malfunctioning, the ecu will continuously treat the motor as if it's not up to operating temperature.
just start off with the ect procedure as outlined in the factory manual. then go to step 2.
