any turbo d15b7 success stories??
ill be boosting my d15b7 in a couple months, have almost all the parts together now, and im just having second thoughts about it. Ive seen a FEW success stories but mostly failures with this motor, however all of the faliures ive recently seen have been because ppl boost up above 10psi, i shouldt be getting above 8, anybody have nething good to say about boosting the ole b7?
You need to look through this forum, or better yet do a search for it. There are people that post here that have boosted d15's & d16's, using a moderate level of boost. A lot of them have had no real problems, to my knowledge. "No real problems" meaning, if they haven't done something extremely stupid, for example, like try to boost 20 psi on one. That little motor with internals can be pretty damn powerful. I've heard of people that have gotten somewhere between 150-200whp from a d15. I would consider that to be a success story. Wouldn't you?
I was looking around in the Forced Induction Forum, as I always do, and came across something I think you need to see. Sorry I didn't put this in the first post, but I was unaware of this porblem.

I think this thread will help you out. Its about an overheating problem in turbo'd SOHC's. If Ifind anything else I will post it or IM you with the news.

its not the case with all turbo SOHC's. some, or maybe even most of us havent had tht issue. me for instance, ive been boosting for six months and over 6k miles, and never had a head lifting/heating problem.
oh yea, and i would consider mine a success story too.

mine lasted me about 15000 miles before the tranny went out....the stock composite head gasket went out at 1000 miles...one ring land at proll 5000 and then from there it was boosted 12 psi daily on a t25 and ran 13.1s...
thanks for any replies, i do read all of the forced induction forum and i read on turbod16 alot too i just see like 100000000000000000000000 posts about d16's to one about a B7, so i thought id ask, ill be keeping mine btwenn 5-7 psi maybe MAYBE an occational 8 when i go to the track, thanks again and ne more replies would be great.
Adding a Cometic head gasket and ARP head studs would be a good idea. The stock head gasket blowing at 10psi and one of the ring lands cracking were the only problems we encountered(2 seperate incidents). That just led to excessive blow-by, which made us turn up the boost to 15 psi on a T25. The motor had over 120K miles, it held together.
8.3@84 mph was the best 1/8th mile time. D15B7 with an AFC setup. We raced the car every week at Kennedale(local 1/8th mile track) for over a year.
We built a D16Y8 block with a Y7 head(reverse mini-me) that ran an 8.3@87 in the 1/8th the night we finished it. It had a T3 turbo setup running 13 psi and an AFC setup. Last time I heard the new owner's running the car lean at 16 psi(retard), and it's still holding together.
The next car will have Uberdata or TurboEdit to pull back timing and protect those precious ring lands. I plan to document a $3K beater build that can run 11s in the quarter, including price of car..
Single cams are cheap and fun, no horror stories from our experience yet...
