There are many alternatives to Dynamat. I'll give you a brief listing of a few, and my opinion of the products referenced to dynamat extreme.
Raamat: http://www.raamaudio.com (slightly cheaper quality than dynamat extreme, but nearly as good, some cars may have melting issues (hot climate, black on black, uncleaned bonding surface)) - Not sure if they still have this deal, but: mention "retrodrive" in comments and get $20 off... it should be about $80 per 62.5ft^2. Website is unstable...noted
Second Skin: http://www.secondskinaudio.com (better than dynamat extreme (damplifier))
Edead: http://www.edesignaudio.com/edead (I like edead v3 liquid-deadener better than dynamat...but perhaps simply because I like liquid deadeners, their mats are similar to dynamat)
Cascade Audio Engineering: http://www.cascadeaudio.com/products.html (These guys make some of the best stuff available, their mats are generally better than dynamat, in my opinion, and the liquid is comparable to the Edead v3 liquid, perhaps better).
I don't like "Fatmat" too much...it's a popular ebay deal. Raamat and Edead present 2 of the better deals. Secondskin or CAE would be my choice for an expensive solution (mat + liquid probably).
Few other products out there:
Scosche Accumat (I've heard that it's at least on par with dynamat)
BrownBead
B-Quiet
Rubberized Undercoating Spray (Cheapass smelly/messy substitute for liquid deadener...doesn't work quite as well but $2-3 for 18oz at walmart I think).
Acoustiblok
I also came across this for bulk orders: http://www.quietsolution.com/m....html --- I wonder how that performs
These all deaden vibration either by mass-loading or visco-elastics... lowering the resonant frequency of the object. There are other products for acoustic treatment to help reduce resonance and reflection, and further block sound.
Some closed-cell products used:
ensolite, dynamat's dynaliner (is that the name of it?), I think Cascade Audio makes something else too.
Open-cell is popular for home theater, you'll see wedge acoustic foam in varying thicknesses and NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient). Wedge-Foam is generally the best deal here, Foambymail makes this for cheap and often has specials on ebay. I wouldn't recommend this for use in too many areas of a car...
The serious competitors will make use of more than just vibration deadening.
