Default I love owning a 16yr old car, w/ 100k on it(Inner Tie-Rod Shot)

Well as some of you know I just fixxed my shot *** brakes on my beater, by upgrading to 10.3" ex brakes . Well it knocked my allignment out, I was gonna fix that today. To my dismay on the way home from work I noticed a knocking from my suspension, I just figured it was something I left loose so I got home and jacked it up. Well everything is tight, but if you put your hands at 9 and 3 o'clock and wiggle on the pass. side you get knockage. I figured ok no biggie just change the outer tierod right, well no futher inspection it appeared ok. When you wiggle it there is no play in the end and if you hold the tie rod the knocking stops. So now I assume it to be the inner tie rod end, one of the few places I have yet to venture on any of my projects thus far. Any hints? I found that Gator did it awhile back, but didn't really say how bad it was. So once again I assume it to be straight forward. Well I'm going to the parts store right now, anybody got any words of wisdom let me know.

Don't whine!!

The last car I built was 40 years old and I couldn't tell you how many miles were on it due to not having the original dash.

Good luck, ive never dealt with inner rods either. Did u have someone else hold the other wheel while u rocked the wheel back and forth? I know it will turn the other wheel too if u dont hold it.

I jacked up each side induvidually so the other wheel still was on the ground. The pass. side made the knocking sound, drivers did not. You can hear it als, it is defintly the inner on the pass. side either that or a bad rack.

I wasn't really whinning, I love working on these cars, sometimes I would like to just take a break and enjoy all the hard work once in awhile.

The thought crossed my mind that maybe u did do each side individually. What other symptoms do u have? Excessive play in the steering wheel, car likes to wander, etc? I hear ya man about just sittin back and enjoying "the fruits of your labor," LMAO. Its always something. Anywho, keep us posted!

Yeah you can feel it in the steering wheel pretty good. It seemed to get worse once I put the breaks on and tested them out a few times. It sounds terrible in gravel, and if you catch a funky groove in the road with that wheel it does all kinds of cool knocking sounds.

I actually narrowed it down to the pass. outer tie rod end. The inners feel fine actually. I replace it and there is still a little slop not any thing like it was, but a little. I'm thinking I should replace the outer on the other side too. It isn't bad but it doesn't feel right. I think the stopping power from the new EX brakes is killing those old joints.

most of the time it is better to just change the rack with a rebuilt one if u need to replace the inner tie rod.. cause the rack is probably leaking too..
