test pipe+tanabe racing medallion= shitty sound??????????
i was thinkin about gettin a test pipe for my 97 ek w/jdmb16a2 with stock exhaust manifold and tanabe racing medallion cat back exhaust my question will this make my car sound like all shitty i like the way it sounds now but i heard my cat is chokin my engine or should i just get a dc sports header4-1
the only way the cat would be choking your engine is if it is clogged. Other then that you will be ok with a stock engine.
Might want to just get a 2.5 cat with a 2.5 exhaust.

A JDM B16a2?
Anyway, I agree with Luserkid, the orginal cat should be ok and if you really want to then maybe get a high flow cat. If you dont have to worry about smog then a test pipe is ok and shouldnt make it sound too rediculous, just keep a resonator in the mix.

if you don't run a resonated Test pipe or Cat.. the exhaust may have a more raspy/rattling can sound..than prior.. when I did do my first swap.. B18B with stock manifold.. and test pipe to tanabe Gpower exhaust.. it was super loud and was raspy as hell..but a resonated test pipe or cat will of course quiet it down to somewhat liveable levels
It will sound bad with a test pipe!Period..Personally I like the sound of power. But it will not make too much of a difference with a stock motor, so stock cat should be ok. Once you get int manifold, cams, header and so on the motor will breath a lot better with a test pipe.
my home made test pipe makes the raspy sound at 5500 rpm.......below that it dose not make a difference. I belive the sound is from resonance.......
my pipe is a WS cat back.
my pipe is a WS cat back.

ive heard raspyness from home-made test pipes before... my h22 hatch had a homemade test pipe and it sounded fine... a lot louder than with a cat but fine... i have a magnaflow 2.5 in/out cat and it sounds perfectly fine... i have a tanabe super racing medallion exhaust... make sure you know what the inlet is for the b16, the outlet should be 2.5 inches

i have no cat and the tanabe racing medallion on my car and i took the resonator out. now its quite buzzy and raspy, so i wouldnt recomend it.
i have no cat and str8 pipe had to add a resonator i couldnt think my car was so loud. and it sucked at street races cuz it made it hard to run from the cops.

Oh no I love the sound of the Tanabe Super Spec Racing Medalion full catback with a stock cat it is not raspy at all it is nice and deeper sounding with the tuned tanabe exhaust sound by far my favorite exhaust on a Honda. I use to have that setup on my 96 Accord and loved it, I now am running a Tanabe Super Spec Hyper Medalion with stock cat on my Hatch and I like it but it is not as loud or as deep, but it is still deep just not like the Racing Spec.

ooo baby that's exactly what i wanted to hear
i know it's one of the best straight through designs but i was concerned about the sound because i don't know anyone that has installed it.
good stuff

I know I am not running the same exhaust system but when I changed out my stock cat for a resonated test pipe and added it to my mix DC header, 2.25 custom exhaust with resonator to a 5 zigen axle back it got raspier then before at about 4000rpm. Sounds good at low rpms nice and deep but then gets loud and annoying.
