A GREAT FI book is "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell.
I learned all of my car basics by working on mine and other peoples and reading an OLD readers digest car book that my father owned.

I can difinitely vouch for that one. My first book was a Haynes.... didn't really know about the Helms yet, it was a good buy. But the Helms covers so much more. Both were worth it I guess.
