Default Rebuilding an Engine

Aright got a quick question...and as an f.y.i....I am very noob when it comes to Honda so give me a break...

I have a 99 stock civic EX coupe...D16y8 engine.....goin to hit 147k miles soon I think...

Is it better to buy a used engine same year as mine with lower miles or just rebuild my engine so it runs like new. Cuz I'm losin mad power quick and I just want to spend little money as possible. I don't want to swap with a B16 or the other ones. I just want my engine the way it was....a good running D16Y8..

Any info appreciated

Are you sure it needs a rebild? Or is there possibly some other issue. Only reason it should need a rebuild if the rings are leaking like a **** or its smoking due to worn crank bearings.
If your going to rebuild it I say build it up and boost it.

Do a compression check on all four cylinders. Also, does smoke/stink come out of the exhaust when your in the higher rpms?

to answer the question: I would say it would be a lot cheaper to just find someone selling a d16y8 shortblock or longblock with lower miles. A rebuild costs a lot more if your going to a shop to get it done. Labor is what brings up the cost.

Hmm...I dunno how to do a compression test...I've read on how to do one but I don't have the tools to do one. And I don't wanna go out and spend the money to get the stuff if I'm only gonna do it once

As far as I know...no smoke or anything comes out of the exhuast at high rpms.... But one thing I do notice is that when I get up past 5500-6000....it starts to climb really really slow...

And no the engine doesn't smoke, no smoke comes out of the car anywhere. But if I drive hard for a while and then get out...I can smell the engine and it smells like burning oil. Dunno what it could be but doesn't sound right haha....oil has been replaced, etc....so blah.... I dunno

Almost sounds like the vtec solonoid isn't popping on. I would pay the money to get it check out by a profesional.

Im pretty sure you can rent a compression tester at a local auto store, like autozone and kragens. I know at autozone you just need to put in a deposit, and when you return the item, they give you all your money back. If no stores in your area carry it, i'm sure one of your friends or neighbors have one you can use.

check fluids, and make sure car is warm, cuz if ur low on oil or if the car is cold vtec wont engage. and btw, d16y8's dont come easy, you can find em as easily as the brother y7 or the z6, but good luck anyway

With 147k on the clock - what does the maintenance history look like?

Cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel, air, and oil filters, valve adjustment, O2 sensor, run any injector cleaner through it regularly....

I have no idea what the maintenance has been like...I got the car at 141k and ever since I personally haven't done anything besides oil change at scheduled time, brake check, and fuel injector cleaner at 144k miles...

And speaking of VTEC....mines only the SOHC. I know my model has VTEC but not as strong as the B16 SI model but still. When my brother first had the car I never noticed a change when climbing through RPM's. EX doesn't have the VTEC kick and all but never noticed a change during RPM climbs....

Dunno if any of that made sense but I'm a noob
