Default manual breaking

just wondering which is the best way to stop; shifting down, into neutral or shifting down to 1st and just put in the clutch when ya come to the stop and take off from there. i've been shifting into neutral but it's such a hassle..

you know, depending on the amount of room i have i go down through the gears, but other times i'll drop it in neutral and use the brakes, it all depends i suppose, anyone else care to add to this?

yeah, i would just time it, like shift down a gear, and then another. btw, i've always wondered how downshifting works? anyone know? i've also heard it uses more gas to downshift.

- By "tranny-breaking" you mean downshifting w/o using your break? i don't do that, but sometimes it's hard to avoid.

if you were say, in 2nd gear goin 30mph (or any other higher gear), could you just shift right into neutral and brake accordingly? or is this a bad habit to practice

Double clutching properly wile you downshift takes care of the clutch wear (and syncro wear too).

so what people are trying to say is that its best to push in the clutch, drop the gear into neutral, and use the brakes, correct?

try not to do engine braking...the brake are here for a purpose.

i am not saying it's gonna hurt your motor by doing so but just considering how much the cost of repair for your drivetrain vs. brake.

well you get the idea.

pull it into neutral and then hit the brakes... or just apply the breaks and stick your foot on the clutch when youre decently slowed down.

I like to put the shifter into say third gear and hold the clutch in while breaking. I do this incase I need to move out of the way of something quickly as I'm slowing down. This way I don't need to press the clutch back in and find a gear then proceed to move out of the way. Then when I stop I put the shifter into first and wait to go again.

I learned engine-braking from my dad, when brake parts were expensive and wore out fast enough that it mattered (hilly terrain). But I simply can't justify it when a set of new brake pads for all 4 wheels costs me $20 at Autozone. As far as downshifting, it's easy: put the lever into D3, 2 and 1

if i feel "up to it" il rev match....rev matching doesnt cause all that much excess wear....not rev matching is what ***** up the drivetrain.....

i double clutch in the MG....just cause 25 year old synchros like to be babied, and no power brakes means its alot harder to slow down...so downshifting really helps

its all a matter of opinion, in reality, one was is not "better" than another, because each has advantages.....if you were to run a search, youd find at least 5 threads on this subject from the past year alone in GDD

Engine braking just means downshifting and then using the engine compressiong to assist the brakes in slowing the vehicle. Doesn't hurt the motor any, and done correctly doesn't wear the clutch significantly. There isn't any vehicle manufactures that say not to do it, most actually recommend it.

I always do it. Guess it is the way that I was taught to drive, but seen others who don't. Just seems to determind how fast you want to stop.

just a quick note...
ware only occurs when parts move over each other....clutch ware occurs during the engaing and disengaging of the clutch to the flywheel. if you cluch is good in ther first place ( i.e. it can handle all the power the engine can give) then cluch ware should not occur.....
i think some one needs to do some research or just some good thinking and then find out where the excess strss is put on the engine during "engine-breaking"/"tranny-breaking"
