How to Remove the shock top hat?

Alright, I am in the process of installing some omni-power coilovers on my ek hatch, and I got the entire spring/shock assembly out...
The problem is when I try to take the top hat off to get the spring out, the shaft and the nut just spin. I tried using a clamp, but this was no luck.
It is tockico illumina's with tein s-tech springs.
Also it would be fine to not use a spring compressor correct? Because I can push down on the tein springs and there isn't much tension.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Of the shock assembly, you're supposed to hold the shaft with an allen wrench and the nut with a box wrench and twist in opposite directions, accordingly. Anyway, just remove the top hat by the two nuts that you normally use when you add an upper strut tower bar. You'll have to anyway because as far as I've seen, doesn't the Omni-Power come with upper pillow mounts?
And no, you don't have to use a spring compressor if the springs aren't putting any force on the top hat once the whole shock assembly is out. Even if so, just aim the top hat portion towards a wall or curb outside your home.

See, that's what I don't understand... How do you hold the shaft with an allen wrench???

if you're saying that you're taking out tokico illuminas then you won't be able to put an allen wrench in the top of the shock shaft b/c the adjustment mechanism is there. On the threads nearest the top of the shock shaft on two sides the shaft should have no thread and be flat, you need to use a wrench to hold the shaft still and break the nut and you shouldn't need a spring compressor just don't take it apart in front of your face or anything.

Ahhh... So, I take it the shafts on the Tokico Illumina's are different than the shafts on the Tokico blues?
If that's how the shafts on the Illumina's are, then I think it's a bad design because it's seems it's easier to strip while you're trying to hold them in place while releasing the nut.
Edit: I just took a look at some Illumina's. They're not all white and there are actually blue Illumina's too. Also, not all the shafts were designed the same way. Some of them don't have that non-threaded part just above the threaded portion, like you mentioned.
civic-rmod: Can you show is a picture of what your shafts look like or at least describe what it looks like? Help us help you.

Thanks for all the feedback.
Actually, the adjustment mechanism on top of the threaded shaft, just pops off and reveals where the allen key goes and your all set!

Get a pair of vise grips and lock them down tight on the shaft/piston. Simple. If you ever plan on reusing the old ones clamp at the very top of the piston near the top hat.
