Default !! HELP!! dif between ls and gsr tranny?

How much faster are the GSR Gears than a LS? Just curious b/c Im running a ls/vtec setup right now ls block/gsr head on a LS Tranny and was curious how much of a difference it is going to make.

just go with a B16 tranny. crazy acceleration. bad highway gas mileage though.

happy 1k post!

it'll definitely make a nice noticable difference.
like he said, the b16 will have better accelleration, but if you want to keep a little more comfort, either switch your ls 5th gear into the b16, or just get the gsr.

"HELP!! dif between ls and gsr tranny?"... Alot!
LS transmision - long gears, good for everyday driving and slightly improved gas mileage.
GSR transmision - Stronger, and shorter gears than an LS tranny. A bit more performance oriented.
B16 transmision - just as strong as a GSR tranny but shorter gears. but some loss of top end, and bad gas mileage.

I remember reading this somewhere here on HT... "torque is what gets you through gears" well if your engine doesn't have the torque needed to accelerate faster, then compensate it by lowering your gears, best way to do it... get a GSR or B16 tranny (id go with B16 tranny).

With the LS/Vtec setup i would go with the GSR tranny, this would get better acceleration towards vtec and especially with a good flywheel. How much faster? staistically i don't know.

i once read an article, either in a mag or on the net, talking about this same thing. it did not include the b16 trans, but anyway. the article had done 1/4 mile runs on the exact same car under same conditions, only one set of tests used a gsr and the other an ls. the result was nearly identical times with the ls having a higher speed at the finish and the gsr killing the 60'. now articles have lied to me before, but that is just what i read. hope it could help. for most performance applications the gsr is nicer, but the ls trans is free

Well this is how I see it...
If all you want to know is speed then its like this, on your engine as is right now a B16 tranny would give you very good acceleration, if your pushing roughly 160+ whp you will get alot of wheel spin which would be a bad thing. some wheel spin is good just not too much.
A GSR tranny would reduce wheel spin as you would lose some torque at the wheels due to higher gear ratios, but you would still get some wheel spin, and if your pushing enough hp you can accelerate faster than a B16 tranny, and ultimately you would be abel to acheive a "higher top speed"(which really don't matter) than a B16 tranny.

But its all up to you, research so you can pick the tranny you would rather have. But if your looking for improved performance then stay away from an ls tranny. Just remember the ls tranny is not built for performance whats-so-ever.

Im looking at around 450 whp in my LS and am just gonna stick with an LS tranny. Why? b/c of the fact that my car isnt at the strip every weekend. I know the gsr or b16 tranny will be faster, but how many of you actually are running at the track all the time?

that still makes no sense to me. what's wrong with the gsr tranny on the street? it's not that short.

You're right as far as accelerating faster, it doesnt make any sense. I just like to stay in the lower rpms b/c of how long my commute is, really just a personal thing. The gsr tranny would be a great compromise for acceleration and a commute. But also the gsr tranny is generally more expensive.

Get the B16 tranny!

I ran an EG6 Y21 when I was NA and I destroyed all friends that ran normal GSR trannies. They called my car the 3rd gear monster because that was the sweetspot. When I went to the darkiside I changed back to a GSR tranny thinking that it would be better for boost. Well, I had to change back to the Y21 after destroying 5th and reverse gear on a 3rd gear mis-shift! I am glad this happened because I now run much better times with the Y21 tranny.
