Default Went to the Track for the first time in my Newly Accquired 95 Prelude VTEC!

Went to Capitol Raceway Tonight in my 95 Prelude VTEC w/144k Miles, that I recently bought which was already modded. Perfect Compression in all 4 Cylinders.

Mods:
DC Sports CatBack SS Exhaust
DC Sport CC Header
AEM CAI
ACT Street Strip Clutch Kit
RS-R Lowering Springs

Conditions:
Street Tires (Dunlop Sp5000 205-55-15 @ 32psi)
about 65 Degrees Outside.

Runs:
#1 (6:49PM)
R/T: .647
60ft: 2.375
330: 6.609
1/8: 10.033
MPH: 71.49
1000: 12.938
1/4: 15.404
MPH: 91.77

#2 (8:57PM)
R/T: 1.093
60ft: 2.365
330: 6.406
1/8: 9.790
MPH: 72.08
1000: 12.673
1/4: 15.140
MPH: 90.91

#3 (10:24PM)
R/T: .674
60ft: 2.281
330: 6.424
1/8: 9.796
MPH: 72.52
1000 : 12.663
1/4: 15.113
MPH: 92.11

Before everyone starts saying, that I can't drive. I've owned 4 Preludes (3 4G VTECS & 1 5G VTEC that all ran in the 14s), so I know how to drive and launch these cars... I'm thinking that the stock cat might be clogged, and that the DC Exhaust is quite restrictive. I think im gonna switch to the Greddy Header, a Test Pipe and a TRM Style Exhaust and Get like a MSD/Crane Cams Ignition Amplifier and Put in a 50k Volt Accel Coil and Chip the ECU to 8.5k and get some Slipstreams and BFG DRS and dip into the low-mid 14s. What are your suggestions or comments? Keep all the B.S to yourself.

Thanks.

That's a pretty typical time for those mods. Not good, but not bad. Should be able to sneak in a high 14 with slightly higher trap speed if the engine is in good running condition and driving conditions are favorable.

I would personally get a better exhaust and get rid of the stock cat., it's such a horsepower jacker. Getting sticky tires is always a big plus. good luck next time.

instead of getting the greddy header, just modify the collector for the dc sports

My Sentiments exactly!

Supra is a garage buggy. The prelude is my daily driver beater Something to toy around with you can say

Matgallis
yea, I would do that to the DC, but the greddy is bigger in all aspects besides the collector, which I think would respond better then the DC if modded.

Thanks.

Wow, I don't think I would of waited around THAT long for drag strip runs! An hour and a half to two hours between 15 second passes down the strip? Ugh.

I'm not quite sure why everyone says the OEM cat is all that restrictive, it actually doesn't look much different than a high flow. Fix the other things, I can almost assure you (short of the cat being clogged) that the other mods will make a bigger difference than the cat.

Any reason for the pressures being so high? I always hear (I don't drag) go down to mid 20's. Though your 60-ft time on your last run isn't bad at all. It just seems like you're bogging the engine a little bit going by the variation that I see between runs 2->3. Since you were around .09 faster to the 60 ft but then slowed down by 330. So shifts can be a little better and the launches need to put you into the chunk of the powerband and the only way to do that is launch at 5-6k and feather all the way to full traction and not allowing the engine to ever go below 4k RPM while keeping full traction. It's hell on a clutch though.

It's a money pit! I would love to drive it everyday but the gas milage is horrible and I'd hate myself for racking up miles on it. In 2 years I've only driven it 7k miles. And it's made about 100 passes down the 1320.

TimeRacer
My launching style was reving from 2.5k-3k and then feathering/dumping the clutch, any higher revs and I was in spin city, I think it's time to invest in some bfg drs and launch her at 5k.

I agree with Timeracer that the stock cat isnt a huge restriction (unless its clogged of course). I made 183.5whp on my last Prelude (95 Prelude VTEC) with I/H/E and VAFC and this was running through the stock cat. I doubt throwing a test pipe on there I could have gained much.

I think the cat is clogged cause it's got this rotten egg smell and has kind of a bog if your cruising and mash down the gas...... any suggestions?

Mike, nice fwhp ##s for your minimal amount of mods, do you mind telling me your vafc settings so I have a base to set mine to and work off with?

Yeah the rotten egg smell is the smell of a failing cat or leak or something. The sad thing is on that dyno day we didnt even read the A/F ratio or anything. We just tried leaning it out and it made a little more power. I believe it was -5 in VTEC till redline.

Lucky Bastards. Try racing with that exact set up at 5280 feet. I would like having that 1/4 mile time here in the mountains. Altitude kills! I drove my Prelude to Vegas last spring (from Denver)--what a differenece! It acted like a totally different car at lower altitude.

just some news for you folks whoever is interested...

Took the Dc SS Rear Section & Muffler off and replaced it with a TRM Style Rear section, and also I cut the resonator off the dc sports exhaust piping and put a piece of straight piping in and also replaced the cat convertor with a ss resonated test pipe.......... I've also sent my t/b out to maxbore.com and also sent my ecu out to get a spoon chip (5k vtec x-over and 8.5k Redline). Before I put the ecu in im gonna swap out the header for a greddy unit. Also gonna bump the timing up to 18 degrees.

let's see how she does.
