98 prelude base, check engine light. need help please.
check engine light just popped on a few days ago. what could the problem be and how could i find that probem? i heard i need to check the obdII with some kind of device. where to look for one and how to do please? the time belt water pump and other pumps had been changed, but whenever i start the car i hear this sqeeking noise and then it stops after i let go the clutch. is there a loose screw on the belts or something to cause it? help me thx.
pull the little panel down on the right side of your center console.. down below the radio the edge closest to the firewall. Look in there, and you'll see a rubber thing holding a plug with two wires in it. I forget what color the plug is now, but if I remember correctly the wire colors in the plug are black and brown (someone else that has look at theirs' more recently want to chime in?) Anyhow, you jumper that plug with a peice of wire, turn the ignition on and the check engine light will flash. every long flash counts as ten, and every quicker flash counts as 1... so 3 long flashes and 7 quick flashes would be error 37.
As a side note, if you know of anyone with the aftermarket speaker adaptors for a newer Honda (such as the prelude)... those adaptors plug right onto the plug you need to jumper. I had a set from my old civic, cut the wires that use to go to the aftermarket speaker and just tapped them together. Plugging that little "jumper cable" on in the dark at the track or anything like that is alot easier than trying to find a peice of wire and get it into those holes.

ok no wonder. the area by the right console is missing the cover from the previous owner. i knew there was something fishy. thx. yea could anyone else chip in? so basically just check if it's error 37 and if it is, just put in the adaptor to fix the engine light thats on? thx. -tony oh yea what you mean by jumping the plug?
You can also use a paperclip or staple if bent correctly. No need to cut a specific length of wire and splice the ends. It all works the same. Keep the paperclip in your glove box for future use. It will come in handy. Search for forum for CEL codes and go from there. Good luck.
