Rattling noises from engine bay in EG
Anyone had a funny rattling sound (like a loose bolt) coming from their engine bay when revs are kept at roughly 1100 rpms? Don't know why, but rattling comes only at around 1100, and at all other revs its fine. I don't feel a performance decrease in my car, nor does it sound like the engine is gonna explode.
I have an EG with aftermarket exhaust, and im speculating that maybe there's something up with my exhaust pipe as ive scratch it on numerous speed humps before.
Any ideas fellas? This rattling sound is really annoying the hell outta me.
Thanks

Same here. I am noticing a rattling sound also. Check your torque motor mount (I guess it's called) in the front left lower area. I think my shifter bushings may be out of whack but then again the car could be getting old. Engine is in great condition and I have also hit some bumps...what do you all think.
Peace

Does it make that rattling noise when you start up the car? If so, then it's the Rod Knock, and your engine is about to blow. I suggest you don't take it on the highway, or else you might get stuck there.

Nope, it ain't a pinging at all. Just a really annoying rattling sound. I doubt my engine is gonna blow up in the next few hours of driving, coz I seldom drive it hard.
But it can be easily heard, at 1100 rpms, and its bothering the crap outta me. Funny thing is, it only occurs at 1100 rpms.
As for when i start it up, it sounds all normal. It idles just past 1200 from cold start, but as it fluctuates around 1100, the rattling sound will appear.
If you guys have any more ideas, it would be great. I might get under my car tomorrow, and try shaking my exhaust piping to see if it's that.
Thanx

Its coming straight from the engine bay, and can be heard both in da cockpit and from standing outside. Its really hard to tell where its coming from exactly, but i will try to listening to it more closely tomorrow.

Do you have any type of aftermarket intake stuff and a strut tower brace? I started getting a rattling sound just like you described as soon as I put my tower brace on, and it turns out that a piece of metal on the K&N it tapping against the brace.

Check your exhaust manifold heat shield to make sure its not coming loose. Also take a peek at underneath the car at the catalytic converter heat shield and make sure that is also intact. These tend to rattle when they become loose. Also make sure there is no obstruction if your fan is coming on.

Ok, since we are on the subject of noises coming from the engine, I thought I would ask about mine. It only happens for about 5 minutes or until my car warms up. It gets louder and faster(tick tick tick tick) as I go faster. It eventually goes away though. It sounds like someone putting a piece of paper on a fan blade(not a car fan, but a fan in general(flap flap flap). Anyone know what this might be?

Okay fellas, i went under the car today and tried to locate the source of the noise. I now believe that the cat may be the source of the rattling noise that i have been describing.
Anyone had any experiences with a noisey cat? Could it be cracked?

Yep prolly the heat shield, rip it off, see if it goes away cos i had the same problem awhile back. I very much doubt that your CAT will fail, your car is not that old.

I also had problems like yours found out it was the heat shield bolt had loosened up just enough to fluctuate at low rpms drove me insane till i found it.

that was 23 years ago, I doubt they are still around, probably don't even have the car anymore. If it happens at speed, it likely something that is rotating, like an cv joint/axle or the damper that is installed on it. Or something in the wind, that is catching the wind and vibrating at speed. Possibly a motor mount or a heat shield on an exhaust too.
