Default Wheel spacers... worth it?

I notice H&R have wheel spacers in 5 mm and 15 mm. I'm assuming 5 mm can be used without changing studs and 15 mm can't, right? If I used these, it would be to obtain a wider track. Is it worth it for 10 mm increase in track? What about 30mm? Or are these used only to provide clearance from rubbing against stuff and not really to increase track? I use Civic VX alloys so there is room to increase track.

Also, unrelated, is there any downside to using open lugnuts? They seem alot lighter and they cost the same. Also, do they allow you to use thicker spacers without changing the studs? Thanks.

H&R spacers come with longer studs, that's why they're expensive. There's mixed opinions with using 5mm spacers on factory studs. You might be okay to autocross, but it'd be to your benefit to use longer studs with spacers for racing. There's really no downside to open lug nuts on a race car.

I paid $44 for my set of H&R 5 mm spacers (w/o lugs)

I used 5mm H&R spacers in the ITR to help fit 225s up front, and I didn't use the longer studs. I used some open nuts to make sure I had enough bite, and then I just used the OEM nuts after that. If you're just doing it to provide a wider track, I don't think you'll see much benefit with that change alone.

I didn't know they could be had seperately. There you go.

John -- who paid $70-something for two spacers with studs

Is that for new spacers? I got lucky and picked up a set of used spacers without lugs for half that price.

i used 5 mm spacers because HX requires the 5 mm spacer to clear the 10.3" calipers. i have tracked the setup, it seems to be fine. but i wouldn't really do it often. better do it right and get proper wheels, or put in the spacers.

ehh? the only way you can get more threads is using the deep shank lugnuts. my 13x9 keizer's uses 1/2" spacer and has deep shank lugnuts to allow it to grab tons of threads.

open lugnuts is needed if your studs are long enough where closed lugnuts can't seat.

i have a 95 del sol vtec and a 94 civic si hb, both has abs with 10.3" front brakes. thus the hx requires the 5 mm spacer to clear the caliper (you can grind the caliper too). your ex also has the 10.3 brakes so you have to do the same.

Also, open end lugnuts are a good way to check how far the lug engages on to the thread, especially when using spacers or after-market wheels. Also, a lot of oval and drag racing classes require those so that it is possible for tech-inspectors to verify that the lugs are engaged on to the thread the minimum required amount.
