SSR 4.9 final drive install questions
Hello Gents,
Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I just got a great deal on a new SSR 4.9 final drive thanks to our famous member Kiwi. Now I just need to figure out how to install the thing in my GSR. I asked Kiwi as I bought it but he was not aware of the installation procedure. So, who has bought and installed one and can give me some pointers? It is pretty well documented with the ATS final drive I would need to buy a new first gear, distance collar, and needle bearings to install the final drive. Are these items necessary to install the SSR final drive?
Thanks in advance for all your help.
Erik

We have one in our ITR race car. If I recall, you simply re-use the USDM parts. I can check with my brother, as he installed it though.

Re: SSR 4.9 final drive install questions (AdamITR)
We run one in an S80 jdm 96 ITR box and it went straight in .
There was a little machining required to get the clearances correct but it was two years ago and I cannot remember what we had to . maybe tidying up a spline .

Just remove all the components from the oe countershaft and then reinstall them back on the SRR countershaft. Keep everything in order and you should have no problems. . All the gears/bearings just slide off the shafts. Make sure you torque the nut holding everything on the shaft. I clamped the shaft in a vice between two blocks of wood so I wouldn't damage any of the teeth on the gear.
BTW, I checked the SRR countershaft against all the measurements given in the factory manual for the oe countershaft and every dimension was within the factory specifications. While you're in there, it can't hurt to replace all the bearnings/seals. Ya its a couple of bucks but while the case is open it would be a good idea. The 4.9 gear is big but had no clearance issues with the case.
Bought mine from Kiwi as well.

You need a press (or puller) to get the 4/5 gearset off, but everything else slides off

Re: SSR 4.9 final drive install questions (.RJ)
Thanks guys for your help. It is good to know that the final drive will be plug and play.
I do plan on following the Helms manual with help from this post:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=795700
I also plan on buying one of these to rebuild the tranny while it is apart:

Anyone know why the GSR kit is twice the price of the LS kit? I guess I'll just have pick up the phone and call to find out.
Thanks again for the help.
