Rack & Pinion/ Steering Problem
I've got a 91 CRX SI and Im having some steering issues. I looked at the suspension links so I don't think there's any problems in there. I replace both inner and both outer tie rods and had the car aligned. Every once in a while the car will pull left or right like something is coming loose. I'm gonna be taking the rack out soon. What should I look for?? I didn't realize I posted this in the wrong forum, but Im sure you autocross guys get lots of steering issues.
theres only 2 parts of the CRX rack that can possibly be replaced/rebuilt. the rack end bushing (inside the passenger end, not the rubber wrap) and the pinion bearing. the rack end bushing probably needs replacement, the pinion bearing is likely just fine. also, pinion gearbox should be adjusted.
the rack end bushing is only $10. no need to buy a new rack in my opinion.
more info, read thru the whole thread.

There is also the link between the steering column and the rack itself. I have never taken it out, but a friend in a race last season had something similar to what is happening to you. Turned out that the steering just stopped working and the car kept turning on him while he was racing. Luckily it happened at a spot that was paved and he was able to stop and wait till the race was over.
I guess a bolt had come loose that holds the column into the rack, and it had finally stripped and the steering didn't work anymore.
This was on Jmac's car. I am probably not explaining it well, but I'm sure he can do a better job. Maybe he will chime in on it...

Thanks for your input. I will be removing this on saturday, so hopefully I can find the problem. It sounds like what happened to your friend. I was on the highway, the car pulled into another lane HARD and then the steering magically worked again. Scary.
