Default Quick question on konis and ground control

i dont own a set of konis, but i saw this pic and noticed theres no lower spring perch on em. no wonder GC makes you buy an adapter piece to fit their sleeves. but can somone explain to me how GC sleeves, or heck even normal springs sit on konis? just for my own education...

IIRC (it's been a few years), they supply a spring perch. The perch sits on the circlip which is in one of the three grooves on the pictured shock. Ground control's adapters are intended to work with that circlip thingy.

wow, i saw the circlip, but i didnt think they would rely on only that little piece of metal to hold something like a 1000 lb/ft spring together, but i guess it does and does it fine. thanks.

AS I mentioned in the other KONI thread, that little circlip will take over 20 tns of force if it is simply loaded the way it was designed to be (squarely and captured so it can't expand). Do it wrong and it is not near as strong. Bilstein copied this same method of perch adjustabiliy from us on some cars as well.

Speaking of spring seats, don't mean to over tax your presence, but Lee or anyone do you happen too have any views on this piece?
Are they really only effective on strut suspension?

I was just discussing them with a dealer this week. For those who don't recognize it, it is a special spring seat insert that will compensate for or take away the little bit of side loading inherent in a coil spring and reduce side drag or friction in your shock package.

It is sold by Hyperco Springs who is probably the best race spring manufacturer in the world. They provide most springs for CART, F1, IRL, NASCAR, etc. They have won something like the last 35 Indy 500s in a row. I use their springs on my racecars too but more out of support for good people than because my racecars require the top stuff. I spoke at length a few months ago to the guy who designed and makes it for Hyperco.

The real home for this part is really going to be at the top level of open wheel racing when you have a seriously high end, lightweight racecar and getting the least minute little bit of frictions out of the system is important. If you use a good quality race spring (Hyperco, Eibach, H&R, etc) on your heavier weight fendered car, then you probably will be fine without. Yes there will be a bit of side laods and frictions but not enough to have any perforamcne effect. If I was racing with a million dollar or do race budget, sure I'd have them but I don't think we lower end guys are missing anything. Certainly there is no need for them on the street.

Nice pieces that serve a real theoretical purpose but in the real world going to be at a higher end, limited return for most of us. One use I could see is if you were running a really long, light weight spring with a lot of preload (say on the rear of your Pro-Stock drag car), then you risk having more angular load problems and it could be of better value. Unless they want to give me a set to try, I don't see myself heading out to pay for them for my racecar from my pockets. Not saying they don't work or are bad at all, just focussed several levels above us for guys who have the money and have already split most of the other hairs.

Thanks Lee, I saw your post over on the production board on wiring, I would offer some input but you would likely end up in flames if I added my 2 cents. Many of the people on the production board have lots of experience and good ideas. I’m not putting a production car together just an E/P solo II 92 GSR.
