A preposition:
Our school system is indeed a great place to learn the art of skating through the world, looking purdy while not actually doing anything of substance, if you are so inclined. Lacking any kind of a challenge during middle and high school, I quickly found that putting forth a real effort was a waste of time, and much better information could be found elsewhere if I had the desire to look for it.
Of course, as others have alluded to, what schools really lack is a way to instill that "desire to look," or a method of building real critical thinking skills. I learned more about this in two years of working construction than in twelve (OK, eleven) years of sleeping or drawing through class and getting A's on tests. I also picked up the sad view that real life was about these shallow performances instead of useful work, although it can probably be said that I think too much and end up in the category of crazy.
Did I learn the wrong things in school and suffer as a result? Yes. Did the school system cheat me out of a quality education? Maybe. Are parents, the government, or kids to blame? Those are complex questions which are pretty hard to generalize.
In resonse to the violence thing, I believe those studies are either somewhat manipulative or just backwards in their thinking. A thirst for violence is a Symptom of a violent nature, not a cause.
So there's my enthusiastic $0.20 or $0.002, depending on how you look at it.
Jeff, who goes to college with a GED and, in true asshat form, found a way to excell in all summer classes without doing homework...dammit. Here's to hoping it gets harder.

School got hard for me when I started grad school. Now that I realize in one year I have to write a paper on something that I couldn't care less about to get another paper to stick on my wall. I wish I had taken the 100k my dad gave me for college and purchased a nice used NSX.
Sean who never went to graduation after getting his BS and has no idea where his diploma is. I am sure its sitting in my closet somewhere underneath the old pcs, shoes, etc.
