Default PLUG GAPS

I just tried opening my plug gaps to .065". The car ran great on the low end, but when I floored it, it cut out real bad. It was also harder to start.
Does running the plug gap too wide confuse the computer???

You can't confuse the computer... Wider is generally better, but the plug gap is limited to what the ignition system can handle. When you have a larger gap, it requires more voltage for the spark to jump that gap. And as the RPM increases, the power requirements do as well (ie the coil may not have enough time to re-energize after each firing). That's why your 0.65" worked great on the low end, but cut out at high RPMs.
