so the regular wing (on the merc and red bull) is higher drag than the "outwash" wing seen on the ferrari and sauber.
and the tradeoff is the outwash wing has less total downforce
so if you're merc and your engine is more efficient you end up with more total downforce and you can manage the extra drag.
this means you get P1 in qualy when you turn on party mode on high downforce tracks
now some tracks the lower drag outwash wing will dominate, but over the balance of the season? not sure.
history has shown that more downforce wins championships
and the tradeoff is the outwash wing has less total downforce

I find it interesting that RB and TR have the 2 different philosophies between them. They can't share data among the team (at least not chassis data) but I'm sure there is a way for some knowledge transfer.
Newey should get a fake mustache and show up in the TR garage as Evil Newey.

He now wears a beard and his body language is different. He bends his upper body forward, leans on the table - a sign of aggressiveness and not a defensive posture. His eyes are always directed forward, he never looks away, as people often do, who are insecure. Bottas does everything to show us: I'm not a nice boy anymore. I am a warrior now. so f1technical says i'm an idiot and even the outwash wings make more downforce than can be balanced out by the rear wing.
it's all about setting up the flow for the rest of the car, and outwash or regular wing you have to manage the whole car aero to be fastest.
