Sounds like a bad combo of a lax tech, unprepared track, and an iffy car....

'normalization of deviance' is a term I've only used in aviation and aerospace, but I think it applies here too.

But it is. Strategy comes into play. If you pit you risk falling back in the pack. (Monaco last year when Mercedes threw away the race for Hamilton) If you don't pit you may gain a considerable number of places. Not to mention, it's an actual pit stop. A mistake can cost you places there too.

I'm not sure if anyone noticed during the race, but by putting Hamilton on mediums right before the caution flag should have nearly handed him the race on a silver platter. Everyone else ahead of him needed to make a stop and the delta between the tire sets was not very good as seen with Vettel on super softs vs Nico on medium where Vettel only gained a ~4sec advantage. A bunch of yellow flag pit stops would have pushed him right to the front. It was one hell of a strategic move by Mercedes.

IMO, this is actually where I think NASCAR does it better. Red flag, can't touch the car. When yellow resumes they give a lap for pit stops and then off they go. Failing that, if you touch the car during a red flag you go to the back of the pack (multiple cars touched are placed in order as they were placed on the grid)

red flags are so rare in F1 that it isn't going to change the outcome of a season

maybe in bumper cars it makes more sense to have the NO TOUCHING rule

A few points would have changed the outcome in 2010 and 2012.

I'm talking about points. The ability to change tires and work on the cars under the red flag clearly impacted the outcome of the race. The points difference could come into play later in the season.

there was one red-flagged race in each of the 2010 and 2012 seasons. both were due to rain.

I'm not a fan of being able to work on the cars during a red flag period too.

Merc had how many 1-2 finishes without red flags? Doesn't look like the red flag altered too much of the outcome - not as much as people would like to think anyway.

Vettel and Ham in the same team. Who do you think will come out on top?

Do you think Versenna has a right to complain about Sainz? If he's that much faster he should just pass Sainz like any other competitor. I get that passing is difficult because of the track and aero but I don't think you should get a free pass if your slower teammate is ahead of you.

Drivers will complain. If he was faster, he should have passed. That said, Max > Carlos.

You're right. When I heard that Max got the ride and Sainz was going to be his teammate I expected Sainz to come out on top as he had experience in more powerful cars and was an FR3.5 champ. But looks like Max is better.
