New rims or new tires? Your thoughts?
Ok,
Hi all, it's 9:56 and I'm not working! I don't know what to do!
I need some opinions (maybe this is the wrong place LOL). I have a set of Toyo RA-1's 225-50-15 mounted on my stock ITR rims. The rims hold the tire but are so narrow that i am getting an uncomfortable amount of "squirm" on the rim. I have run 205's on those rims and liked them very much.
I am deciding to either keep the 225 footprint and sell my ITR rims for a set of inexpensive 7" wide rims OR sell the tires and get a set of 205's again. The bigger combo will be heavyer but more rubber down, the other lighter but less footprint.
What do you think?
Chris

I'd definately get a nice set of tires over "inexpensive" rims. but depends what you have in mind by "inexpensive" from what im hearing, many people on this board tend to think Rotas are good value. light wieght and inexpensive... though i dunno if they come in 225 for "15. that would be perfect IMO.
why don't you get a set of those rims and competition tires strictly for SCCA events and keep the rubbers u have for regular driving like me?

ToneyTigre-
Actually these are my dedicated track wheels. I have another set on the car for the street. R compound Toyo RA-1 are plenty of tire for me, the question is more about running 225's over 205's.
BTW inexpensive is under $150 a wheel.

you will always be better running a reasonably wider tire because of nore contact patch etc.
a good wheel for under $150 is the Kosei K1

I would just get some kosei K1s IMO.. 120$ at tire rack.. its also cheaper than buying new Toyos.. They weigh about 13lbs and are pretty strong...
I went from stock 15x6.5" prelude wheels to 15x7" K1s and noticed a huge difference, I could just tell that there was more tire on the ground with 225/50/15s

I'd get the 7" wide wheels. You can put a 205 *or* a 225 on them without a problem. And you'll have them the whole time you have the car - tires, obviously, wear out. Wheels would be a better place to use the money IMO.
Koseis are popular. My track wheels are Enkeis, RF-1s I think. Discount tire direct sells Enkeis, and some of them are quite light and reasonably priced.
