After missing Round 11 & 12 due to Speed World Challenge, we are back in force. It is nice to be back in club racing environment, see familiar and friendly faces, talks to friends, etc. Despite all that and a 6 weeks break, the team is back with their usual determination, hard work and diciplines. Since this is the last race before Nationals at Mid Ohio, we are using it to shake down the car, test reliability, but we also would like to take the win for the weekend.

The big event has finally come. We have been sorting the car out all year for this particular weekend. We also learned a lot from last year and came better prepared. However, we are still far from veterans, in fact we are still a learning team and there are much more to learn, but we are pumped. This time we are prepared with a pair of identically prepared World Challenge engine. Comptech built, using Supertech valves, valve springs and their newest pistons. We are psyched as initial dyno provided expected numbers. This was further verified by testing at local track. This time we should have the car that capable to run in the mix.

We got the car shipped out along 2 other Honda Challenge competitor and 1 CMC competitor. This way, we can just take the plane and none of us need to take too much time off work. For this trip, Prima Racing consists of Andrie Hartanto, Julie Hadi, Jim Shen, our team manager, and Chris Smith, crew chief for the week.
Wednesday, Sept 13, 2006
We arrived at Columbus Airport at 3pm and head to the track right away. The drive took us through beautiful country side and lasted about 1.25 hours. We got to the track around 5pm, which gives us enough time to take a quick look of the area and admire the facility and get familiar with the area. After that we take a look over the car and make sure we get the car ready for tomorrow. Since this is the first time for any of us here, we don't know what to expect. We all anxiously wait for tomorrow.
The drivers meeting starts at 8pm. It is the largest drivers meeting I've ever been to. We are also greeted with local food, and beer. I must say the week seem to have a promising outlook.
We checked into the hotel near 10pm, at Mansfield, a quaint little town about 20 minutes away from the track.
Thursday, Sept 14, 2006
Morning Practice,
It is cold and a little foggy. First time out and Andrie is still learning the track. The video and data provided by Jeremy Lucas at Fast Tech Limited prior to the championship week proved to be very beneficial. He was able to turn 1:45s in his first session, which is 2nd fastest, just below Chad Slagg, local hero.
Second Session,
Andrie is getting much more comfortable. Started to crank some fast lap and was able to top the timing chart with 1:41s. We are very optimistic since we know there are still room to improve. After all, this is only his second session ever in Mid Ohio. At the de-brief, Andrie mentioned that the he felt slight push on mid corner on some of the tighter corners. After discussion with everyone involve, we decided to leave the suspension alone and just focus in getting familiar with the track. We don't feel changes are needed until Andrie is 100% comfortable with the track.
Third Session,
Andrie improved his lap time by a big margin. He got into 1:40s. A time that never been touched by other Honda Challenge racers here. Jon Meris with his B20 Vtec motor follow closely. With only 5/100th of a second seperating them. Chad Slagg dropped into third on the time chart. Unfortunately for Jon Meris, he mis shifted and damaged his engine beyond repair. He and his crew will have to do engine swap tonight. We let them use our garage to do the engine swap to ease the pain.
At the de-brief, Andrie again mention the understeer problem on tight corners. Looking at the time chart, we know he is close to 100% comfortable with the track. We decided to make the necessary changes to try to remedy the situation. Additionally, we are also replacing the front pads with a fresh one to utilize the short morning session to bed the brakes tomorrow.
With Andrie on top of the chart the last 2 sessions, we left the track with confidence and a great outlook for tomorrow.
Friday, Sept 15, 2006
Morning practice,
The track condition is slightly better than yesterday morning. But it is still cold with slight fog. Since this is only a 10 min session, this is a perfect session to use to bed a new brake pads. After the session, the crew swapped the pads back to the old one to get ready for qualifying. On the de-brief, Andrie reported the car behaved much better, and the understeer is no longer there.
Qualifying,
The competition is tough. The field lining up on the grid much earlier than we used to. We had to settle to start from the back of the grid. Definitely a learning experience and we need to get to the grid much earlier than we used to. We are a little concern with with traffic since we never raced with the majority of competitors here before. Luckily, traffic was not a big factor. Andrie was able to grab pole position with 1:40.206. Over a second faster than second place, Chad Slagg with 1:41.405. Jason Franza is third with 1:41.487. Michael Lee is fourth with 1:41.636 and Kevin Helms round up the top 5 with 1:41.820.
After the qualifying, all H1 cars were sent to the dyno. It was good to see that we are all pretty even in HP number.
Qualifying Race,
Starting off-pole, Chad Slagg launched like a bullet out of a hole Hartanto, never known as a strong standing starter managed to hold off charging Franza and slot into 2nd position. Quickly Hartanto was able to get onto Slagg's bumper and applying the pressure. Slagg, feeling the pressure tried to protect. With the mounting pressure, finally Slag made a mistake in thunder valley going wide. Hartanto quickly took advantage and sneak onto the inside and taken the lead. From then on, he never looked back and took the first win of the week. Chad Slagg retained second position followed by Jason Franza, Michael Lee, and Peter Curpier rounding the top 5.
Saturday, Sept 16, 2006,
Morning Practice,
Since the morning practice is only 10 minutes session, the team decided to utilize this to again bed in the brake pads. For whatever reason, Andrie managed to again claim top position on the time chart.
Qualifying,
Learning from the experience yesterday, the team sent the car out on the grid much earlier. We were still beaten by a few cars but, only the 8th car on the grid. This given better opportunity to set the fast lap early and save the car by not running full session. Andrie managed to turn in a few fast lap and grabbed the pole with 1:40.259. Chad is second with 1:41.056, followed by Kevin Helms, Kelsey Smith and Peter Curpier.
Qualifying Race,
Standing start is exciting and fun, but has never been Hartanto's strongest point. At the start, Slagg, again got a good launch and lead into turn 1. Helms also got a good launch and sneak his nose to the inside and went side by side with Hartanto into turn 1. Hartanto was able to hold on and came out on top. Hartanto is in hot pursuit and quickly applying pressure on Slagg. By turn 7, Hartanto is all over Slagg's bumper and keeping hard pressure. Slagg protected well and they cross the start/finish line with Chad slagg still leading and Hartanto following closely. Behind them, Helms is being pressure by Mike Lee who got by Curpier.
Continuing the pressure on lap 2, Hartanto is glued to Slagg's back bumper at madness. Tried outside-inside move at turn 9 and going into turn 10 side by side. Slagg was able to edge out at turn 11 and maintain his lead. Working lap 3, Slagg continued his lead while Hartanto followoing closely. Behind them, Franza and Helms is following closely waiting for the right opportunity to pounce. Mike Lee was able to get by Curpier and in hot pursuit to catch the front pack. Hartanto again tried and outside-inside move on turn 9 and again they are side by side going into turn 10. Slagg again was able to edge out and come first into turn 11. However, this time he ran wide and Hartanto tried to capitalize going into the inside. Slagg was able to power out and lead into the carousel but with compromise speed. Hartanto tried the outside move as they are side by side around the carousel. Hartanto was able make the pass stick as they cross the start/finish line. From then on, Hartanto slowly built a gap and crossed the finish line 4 seconds ahead while registering the fastest lap of the week with 1:39.972
With the second win, this ensure a pole position for Hartanto on the Sunday Championship Race. Chad Slagg is second, with Mike Lee on the inside of row 2 and Kevin Helms on the outide. Jason Franza round up the top 5.
At the de-brief, Andrie reported of vibration at the first half of the race but dissapeared on the second half of the race. The crew did a quick check but can find nothing.
Sunday, Sept 17, 2006,
Morning Practice,
Andrie went out and quickly reported a bad vibration that noticeably worse than yesterday. He tried a few laps, but then decided to bring the car in for further inspection. The crew inspected and this time they found a pretty big crack on the front left rotor. They quickly got to work and replaced the rotor as well as run a fresh front pads for the race.
Championship Race
With the perfect launch time after time, we sort of expected Chad Slagg to lead on the first lap. Hartanto followed suit in second place, with Franza slot into third, Helms in fourth, Mike Lee dropped into 6th just behind Peter Curpier. Hartanto determine to get the lead back early tried the inside move at the keyhole and went out side by side. Unfortunately Slagg was able to motor through at the back straight and lead onto turn 7. At Madness, Slagg went wide and Hartanto quickly pounced to the inside and go side by side all the way into the carousel. Slag came out on top and maintian his lead crossing start/finish line.
Working Lap 2, Slagg went wide in turn 1 and Hartanto was able to get to the inside and made the pass stick. Slowly Hartanto is pulling away and create a sizeable gap. The battle behind him ensued with Slagg, Franza and Helms nose to tail and Mike Lee is lurking from the outside hoping one of them make a mistake. Slowly Lee is leering them in and soon, it is a 4 way battle for second place. Helms made a mistake which enabled Lee to pass through. Now the Top 5 are Hartanto, Slagg, Franza, Lee, and Helms.
At the 20 min mark, while passing an H5 car, Hartanto was squeezed onto the grass at the chicane. Hartanto was able to save the car and rejoin the field maintaining his lead. His sizeable gap, however, is nil. Slagg is all over his bumper. With the dirt still on his tires, Hartanto is sliding around the track maintaining his lead. The next lap, he was able to slowly build the gap again.
Behind him, Slagg and Franza is in heated battle for second place. Going into turn 7, Franza tried an inside move and tried to outbrake Slagg. However, this put them both in the marble and they made contact which sent them both on the outside grass. Mike Lee and Kevin Helms took advantage of the situation and now running second and third. Franza rejoin in fourth and Slagg right behind him in 5th. That's how we finished the race. Hartanto took the win, followed by Mike Lee and Kevin Helms filling the last podium place. Chad Slagg was just behind Jason Franza rounding the top 5.
After the race, all the top 4 has to do some teardown to check legality. The H1 crowd has to take the oil pan off to check if we running stock rods and stock pistons. Once they determined everyone is legal, it is time to crown the Champion.
Big thanks to:
1. Jim Shen and Chris Smith in making the trip with the team and worked flawlessly through the week.
