NASA HPDS Nov 3-4 Package Deal Update..
Hey everyone.. For anyone interested in the Nov 3-4 track event and want the group discount, this is what we are gonna do.. George Knighton is going to head up the discount.. All registration forms with credit card numbers need to be faxed to him.. Credit Card is the only way to make payment, simply because we don't know what the cost is yet.. You have to go both days to get the discount. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DRIVE A HONDA! Any make can get in on the discount.
If its less then 10 people, then its 279$
If more than 10, its $251.10
If its 20 or more, there is a chance of another price reduction, that would be great!
The deadline is Oct 17, 2001.
George will post his info soon.. As for Bryan and Morgan who already sent in their stuff.. They are added to our list but George needs to get you Forms..
I hope this will work for everyone, because its the only feasable way to do this without having to refund the discount, which is a PITA!
You can count me in, so thats #1

Sorry... I got a little anxious. To be technically correct though I would be #1 on the list because I have already paid. Just joking! Can't wait to be there.

I'm definitely going as long as I can track down and fix the source of unsettling noises coming from my front end. (Me thinks wheel bearings and bushings are shot). So unfortunately I can't commit just yet.

Funny the reason I just joined this board was to find out more about upcoming schools by groups like NASA. Count me in 99% sure (gotta check w/the wife)

You came to the right web board, welcome!
Thank you! Ive been reading threads on here all day and I can already tell that you are right. Looks like a great bunch of speed freaks hang out here and treat each other with respect.
I will prob have about a million questions since this will be my first track event after years of wanting to get out there. Im really looking forward to getting my car out on a real road course instead of just watching it on tv. Im sure I will be slow as hell compared to you guys though.
First question, will an m95 rated Arai motorcycle helmet be ok?
TIA,
Dave

Your helemt should be fine but SA95 helmet or newer would be better. Where in VA are you located? And don't worry about being the slowest.... fast is not the main point andd you will think you are flying anyway. Glad to have you coming.

Welcome to the NASA-VA Summit Point Event.
Your biggest concern for car preparation will be your brakes. Make sure your pads have at least 50% of the material left. If you choose to upgrade, some drivers have a set of high performance pads that they use just for the track. Get some high boiling point brake fluid. Over 500 degrees F DRY boiling point is preferred. I use stock Ford DOT 3 fluid which has a dry boiling point of 550 degrees F.
The driving instructuction you will receive is some of the best in the country. You will have an in car insrtuctor until you reach the advanced driver stage. Don't worry about how fast you are. Just listen to the instructor and you will be fine.
We are always happy to have new drivers join us. If you have any specific questions, you can call me at 703-250-4906 or ask them here
By the way, your helmet is fine. The major difference between a SA rated and a M rated helmet is the fireproof lining.
Should you choose to purchase a helmet, I would recommend a SA rated one as it is specifically designed for automobile racing. As the SA2000 rated helmets are now available, some good deals can be had on some SA95 rated ones which will be good in the HPDE program for another 10 years. (Five should you choose to become a wheel-to-wheel driver).

Re: NASA HPDS Nov 3-4 Package Deal Update.. (Grumpy)
I posted George's letter on the VMSC board, Paul Rice seems interested in signing up with the group, but since he's a little wary about sending his CC# to someone he doesn't know since he's not familiar with the Honda-Tech trank-junky crew. 1-3 members on I-Club expressed interest in joining the group as well. George, is there any way I can post an email address to you so they'll have a way of contacting the person they're essentially writing a blank check to? If not, does anyone have any other suggestions?
Chris, just trying to help get people so friends far far away can have fun and save $$$

Thanks Jon... well GK I know your real email address, but I felt I should request permission to post that elsewhere prior to doing so, since it is guarded with state-of-the-art technology on your webpage.

Re: NASA HPDS Nov 3-4 Package Deal Update.. (urbanlegend21)
Urban I live right above Ashland (15 miles N of Richmond) and work in downtown Ric. Where I live there are lots of big trucks. And Mustangs with dark tint and Flowmasters. And Hondas with chrome wheels. And ugly alteza tail lights on just about anything. All they care about here is shows or drag which are both boring to me. So it is really nice to see that there are some go fast around turns types in VA!
Grumpy I was going to run Motul 600 brake fluid. If it is the same as the motorcycle stuff I use on my CBR it should be very good. Please let me know if there is something better I should use instead. Does anybody know if the bike Motul 600 is the same as the car Motul 600? Because I already have 3 cans of bike Motul 600 that I could use.
For pads I was told to leave the rears stock but use something like a Metal Master or EBC Green Stuff on the front. Does that sound good? I wont be hard on the brakes because Im a newbie. But I would hate to miss track time because I fried the stock crap. From what I hear the brakes get very hot in Turn 1 and Turn 5! BTW The rotors are stock - only 17k miles old and they still look new to me.
Thanks again for making me feel welcome everybody. I look forward to meeting all of you at the track in Nov. Ive almost conviced the wife to let me go.
Dave
p.s. who ever left the NASA flyer on my car with this website written on the back - thank you very much I owe you a beer!

This is Paul Rice (mentioned earlier). Yes that is really my last name, I am not making a joke about imports.
I know and trust Jon so I'll be sending in my fax as soon as I pay my credit card bill. I have to let that thing cool down a little.
Hope to see you all there!

GT2Dave add to your brake pad considerations Carbotech Panther Plus or Hawk HP Plus. Lots of bite and fade resistance for the track, but a bit harder on rotors than "street" pads.

Hawk HP plus, well, its a great autox pad, but really doesn't cut it on the track, just ask WRXracer111..
Carbotech Panther Plus, great pad, somewhat streetable
Next suggestion would be porterfield R4, awesome pad, but very expensive
Damn, I guess i'll have to pay with me debit card, oh well

Corey, you might want to check with Elyse on that, this was back at that VIR N. event that I tried to use the D. card. Things might have changed.

Yep, do NOT run EBC Greens on the track. You will be very disappointed with them. MaddMatt had a horrible time with the EBC Red compound as well. The Hawk HP+ are exactly as everyone has said... uber-pad for autocross and street where they make horrendous noises and coat the wheels in black dust but have all the power you'd want, but flat can't take the heat generated on track. Least, if you can make 'em work... you're not using the brakes like you could be. If you want to invest in some track pads, pick up a set of Hawk Blues ($125 from Essex Parts) and you should be able to throw your face into the dashboard from high speeds at will. Corey has run both pads and I believe the consensus was that they were quite similar to the Carbotechs. They're a definite track-only pad, since they'll eat your rotors as part of mid-afternoon tea when they are cold. If you get them, factor in the extra 20-30 minutes or so it takes to swap the front pads.

Re: NASA HPDS Nov 3-4 Package Deal Update.. (Honda318dx)
Welcome both of you. You're in the right place. A little over a year ago, I was absolutely flabbergasted to see (finally!) a Honda-oriented board that talked about autocrossing and road racing. So many of them talk about car shows, clear taillights, street racing and stereos. Not that those things are necessarily a bad thing - a car enthusiast is a car enthusiast. It's just not for me.
And you'll enjoy the NASA event thoroughly. Summit is a *great* track. If I weren't a THSCC guy doing the time trial event that same weekend at CMP, I'd be all over this.
Something you should take some time doing is searching the archived topics for your favorite topics. In recent months there have been some incredibly good discussions of driver instruction, suspension tuning, and countless other things.
