what is this tab for? the caution reads: "Bend this tab after inserting ratchet bar"

 

so that the ratchet bar can't come out of the stand
also prevents it from extending too far

 

I didn't bend mine yet....using it for 2 years that way so far...

yea been using mine for about 18 months without bending the tab. never fallen on me or off the stands *knocks on wood*

The bent tab keeps the 'rachet bar' from falling out on your toe if you handle the stand upside down.

 

how funny... I just noticed that on mine this weekend too.. we have the exact same brand jacks, I think.. I'm thinking of doing the old "weld to the plate" thing after seeing other low $ stands fail along the seam, though.
