Default EF question

I would like to get into autocrossing (scca solo) and am selling my prelude because I think I have found a car more suited to the track. It is a '90 civic Si with B18B swap and a 10 point cage, stripped interior, various suspension mods. My question is what class would this car fit in? Would I be put in a tougher class because of these mods. Bear with me, as I am new to this forum (obviously!)

The kind you dont want to be playing with. They're loud, mean, slick-tired, fuel-belching and in general just very angry machines.

If this car in question is cheap, and you just want something to play with then sure, buy it and run it. It will probably be a bitch to learn on. Also, make sure that cage is solo1/solo2/IT legal and not a drag cage (they're very different)

Post up a picture and we'll tell you.

There's a cage thread on the first page of the forum, look at those pictures - if it looks like that its probably legal. If it doesnt, then its probably not.

thanks a lot for the advice, much appreciated.
I'll try to post pics.
In your opinion would the prelude listed in my sig. be a better car to play with, or do you think the civic is a good deal.

having a 2nd car for track and autocross use is always a good idea, since it be immobile for extended periods of time while you work on it, wait for parts, cry over busted chit, etc.

looks like its SCCA legal, although silghtly lacking. Needs a real seat and some 5 point belts.

Oh and if you're buying an old car for track use then just expect it not to run or drive. That way when it does, you'll be happy.

I get a momo course and 5 pt. with it actually
the engine was just swapped recently so it should have no problem w/ reliability (42k miles)
Should I buy it or stick with the 'lude?

That cage is... odd.

Looks like maybe part of an autopower bolt in with some 1" tubing added here and there? I'm just guessing.
Maybe I'm just missing them, but it looks like some required tubing is missing.

If you're just going to autocross, pull that thing out.

I'm planning on replacing as much of the interior as I can.
What would I be competing with in s mod?

I agree w/ Catch - I don't know if anyone could definitively tell from those pictures the legality or the effectiveness. If it were I, I would not put the "cage" on the balance sheet for this purchase.

To run street mod you need a full interior, except the back seat.

Rustangs, camarobirds, overboosted WRsuX, ohter hybrid hatches... etc.

It needs a welded diaganal for one.

If you were serious about the car, cut out the forward tubes, and weld in a diaganal in the main hoop. You then have a SCCA Solo1 legal rollbar, which is really all you'd want for autocross - anything more is just extra weight.

Should the prelude stay or should it go?
Are preludes good track cars? Haven't heard too much about them?

Would this be Jake's car?

D Mod. Welcome to the club. You'll be racing with 1000lb aluminum cars with more horsepower. However, locally you'll be racing against me. Please join the D Mod Honda club It's a very exclusive club and we all have a great deal of humility.

Come on out and have fun. The car will do just fine if it is set-up properly.

Ausmith - who needs to finish his kaa.

Not me, but a cool kaa. Notice the clear rear wing?

DMod. I think a B18.
