Default CRX oversteering bad...what is it?

1988 CRX HF

Things affecting handling for information:
- battery relocated to back
- no heat, no a/c, gutted rear
- B18C5 (generally considered pretty light)
- FSTB, rollbar
- Azenis 205/50/15 RT-615's on Falken Hanabi 15x7's all around, equal tire pressures at 29 psi (low i know)
- GC 400f/600r springs
- Koni Yellows
- ST 22mm rear sway bar on outer most hole, stock CRX HF front sway bar
- Replaced rear trailing arm bushings

I started off with the rear shocks full stiff, front full soft: oversteered
Then I put the rear halfway soft, front stillfull soft: oversteered
Front and rear at full soft, getting desperate here: oversteered
Not this is nuts, rear full soft, front halfway stiff: oversteered

What is wrong? I have VIR HPDE next weekend!

I'm going to try 33 psi up front, 32 psi in the rear sometime soon, maybe that'll help.

are you on the brakes at all during turning? If you yes, then that's your problem.

Of course not, I am usually in partial throttle, which should make it understeer if anything. I have done some turns without throttle, and it oversteers then too. Should I try disconnecting the rear sway bar?

A guy on another board had a similar problem, with the rear stepping out uncontrollably, mid corner. for him, it was his left front upper balljoint.

Jon, what were the specs on your alignment? with that set up, car should be quite neutral to oversteery(word?) I would stiffen the front shocks, and maybe raise the air pressure in the front.

Where were you able to drive it to find it oversteered, auto-x?

I would like to know your alignment specs as well. Were you at a trackday or autox? Was it high speed or low speed corners?

With that setup, the car should push and not have any oversteer on throttle depending on the alignment.

I figured it out...the rear right wheel bearing was not seated on all way, allowing me to move the wheel around in any direction. I fixed that, then put all the tires to 32 psi, it understeered like a *****

So now I have it 90 degrees off full soft in the front, 90 degrees off full stiff in the rear, and it's perfect.

I did it in an open parking lot at about 30 mph doing a continuous circle like a skidpad.

Got a new problem though, my gas tank builds pressure and leaks gas out the fill...I guess I'll start a new thread

88 CRX's had different rear compensator arm mounting locations vs the 89-91, hence the 88's are known for being quite a bit more twitchy in the rear.

I had a similar issue with my 88 CRX Si, that thing would just snap oversteer if I wasn't careful! Your spring rates also might have something to do with it? I don't know too much about older hondas in terms of spring rates but I thought most people ran slightly higher front rates then rear. I know the newer hondas (DC5/EP3,etc) they run higher rates in the rear.

Anyways good luck figuring out what it is.

Drill a hole in the gascap, like 1/16" or so, just to relieve some pressure... My circle track car did that...

Does the car have a full exhaust? If not make sure you have a turn down. I had a turn down fall off my civic and the same thing happened, the heat caused the fuel to evaporate and pressurized the tank.
