Default Brake question/problem

To make a long story short, i need the caliper bracket mounting bolts. The one that holds the brakes on the car. in my helms, it says it is 1.25mmx12mm, i think, if acura does not have these, can i go to lowes and get the same size bolt?

Honda/Acura dealers will have them. I bought a pair when I re-did my brakes last year. Lowe's doesn't carry many metric bolt, and even fewer metric Stainless Stell bolt (or Grade 8...I forget).

dont go to a hardware store. they may have metric bolts, but they are not the right grade and standards. get it replaced from honda/acura dealer, or from junkyard (cheaper).

FYI- for odd size bolts in grade 8 or stainless there are several online sites. One ships small number of bolts (instead of whole boxes). Do a yahoo or google search and you can find one that has what you need.

Yeah most of the bolts on our cars are #8 or #10 hardened steel. Don't get anything else!!

grades are marked on the bolts. if it's the right size and grade, get it from the cheapest place. metric stuff is just hard to find in the right sizes, so i often find the dealer is the best place for hardware.

Most ss bolts are the equiv. of a Grade 2 bolt. You wouldn't want to use them where strength will be a concern. Metric ratings, IMO, don't make a whole lot of sense compared to the regular ratings. That is probably because I grew up using the 'standard' ones. Grade 5 is sort of close to metric 8.8. Grade 8 is similar to metric 10.8. 10.8 is used for wheelstuds as an example. Orchard Supply Hardware carries flanged metric bolts. These bolts are stamped 10.8 on them. If you were to find an appropriate length, these should be fine. You should be able to get some decent quality bolts from a good auto parts store as well. Look for the 10.8 marking & you will be fine.

still, even if the bolt at the hardware store is the proper grade and size, i find that the bolt head nut does not match with the conventional Honda 10, 12, 14, 17, 19 mm convention. i bought a M6 flanged head bolt from OSH and it fitted with a 13mm socket, which kinda annoys me since i have my tools all laid out for solely 10, 12,... and dont want to have to carry a 13mm with me just for that one bolt. whenever i go to the picknpull, i try to come back with some hardware.

I wrecked some of these bolts and found replacements (of the proper grade) at the auto parts store. As told above, hardware stores had the right size, but in too weak a grade.

Even if you do find the right strength designation, I would stay away from no-name hardware for a critical application. Also, a bigger number is not always better - some "high strength" bolts (particularly the cheaper ones) can be brittle to the point that they break before they bend. Not good.

Kirk makes a good point. It isn't always better to go to a 'higher' grade bolt. In general, the higher grades do get more brittle. Kind of like it isn't always better to use CrMo for a cage.....

Anyway, in spite of the info I posted above, I generally try to go with OEM parts.

If it's for the front calipers and the Acura parts dept. doesn't have one, trying calling a Honda dealership. If I'm not mistaken, it's the same bolt used on the Accord. Don't ask me how I know this...

Casey, who lost a front caliper mounting bolt after installing S/S brake lines about a year ago...
